About this deal

A gifted storyteller who continues to give fans, old and new, quality entertainment and another addictive, engrossing saga.

Alice always knew there was something strange with her mum, she ever liked to talk about her life before Ralph, and so Alice decides to find out the whole story. Alice’s investigations take her on a journey whereby she discovers her mum’s chequered past and meets many of the people who were involved in her earlier life. As Alice’s trip into her mother’s life comes to a close, she must weigh up her conscientious and decide just how much she will confront her dad Ralph with, and how much he already knows. For me, Sally's tale was one of harshness, harrow and sorrow. There's little wonder why Sally continually reinvented herself to chase away those unbearable situations she found herself trapped in time and time again. It also becomes quite clear why she also chose to remain a closed book with her children and second husband. I actually preferred Sally's encounters to Alice's, whose were a bit too brief for my liking. Deception has a seemingly simple plot as Alice tries to find out about her mother’s past, but told through Alice’s modern 2015 perspective interspersed by her mother’s decades of life, there’s a gradual uncovering that draws in the reader and makes them experience the truth in the same way as Alice uncovers it in a very satisfying narrative. This story is cleverly written from Alice’s perspective and as Alice is on her journey of discovery, it switches to that of her mum. There are no massive twists, just a really well thought out plot which is both interesting and compelling. Nunca muere, nunca pierde lustre. Y sobrevive a la muerte". The book maintains a very good balance, offering just the right amount of intensity without overwhelming the reader. As the story reaches its conclusion, it does so in a satisfying yet somewhat anticipated manner. Nonetheless, the journey to that point is fulfilling and rich in emotional resonance. What I liked most about this authors writing was her ability to create characters that were complicated and messy but very relatable and likeable. It wasn’t the kind of story where I was wish wishing for a happy ending for everyone, I felt like I was wishing for contentment and closure. Which I suppose is arguably a happy ending.

Based on a true story, Mary Broad brings to life the horrors that a somewhat trivial crime could bring about in that period of time. 1786, shy of her twentieth birthday, Mary is sentenced to death by hanging, for the crime of stealing a silk hat. Spared her death sentence, she is sentenced to be shipped to Australia to live out her sentence and be put to work. From sentencing, the journey across the sea and eventually landing on the shore and the colony to work and fight for survival. UK historical fiction sensation Lesley Pearse is in top form with her latest melodrama about a daughter confronted with a truth that leads to her unraveling the past.

This is a remarkable true story of a young girl from Cornwall in England named Mary Broad who is convicted & sentenced to death for a petty theft. But instead she is transported to Australia as a prisoner. The story is enjoyable & captivating; historically enlightening. It takes you on a gripping sea voyage with the first fleet of convicts to Australia. The journey delves deep into the early days of these convicts...the first settlement in the country...How they had to struggle against appalling conditions to make the land viable for survival & living...and the hardships they endured. Raunchier than I’m used to from Lesley Pearse, Deception conveys the eras, particularly of Fleur’s experience, to perfection. Touches of realism such as the musical Hair add a sense of authenticity and the sexist, male dominated world feels so convincing. A true highlight for me was Sally, a very intriguing character, leading a very colourful life, I could have easily read a whole book on just her and what happened. ENG: I decided to read a Lesley Pearse book hoping it would be one of those cute romances everybody talks about. However, and without me knowing, I chose one of her books that do not fit it that category. In fact, I had never read such a violent book in my life.

Also the transportation of prisoners is another of her stories in these books dealing with the treatment of prisoners who were sent to Australia to start up settlements. The criminal treatment that was involved with the transportation on the ships was barbaric leaving many prisoners dead or not far from it, with captains paid per head regardless of them being alive or not. The constant shortages of food and corporal punishment meted out was criminal while having to work in very harsh conditions and expected to maintain schedule of works.

Eve should never have married Don Hathaway. Yes, he gave her two beautiful children - Olly and Tabitha - but he is a bully. Worse than that, he hurts her.
