About this deal

It’s not just a looker, though. The Galaxy S22 Ultra – like the rest of the lineup – is fully IP68-certified against dust and water, and it’s also the first smartphone to benefit from Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus, which is a new protective layer that’s been applied to both the front and rear of the handset. According to Samsung, Victus Plus is 12.5% stronger than the Gorilla Glass Victus on last year’s model, and the S22’s new “Armour Aluminum” chassis is more durable, too. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra review: S Pen stylus For Super Fast Charging function, we recommend using the original Samsung Power Adapter and data cable, sold separately. For best results, use 45W Power Adapter with Galaxy S22 Ultra and S22+ and 25W Power Adapter for Galaxy S22. Like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the S22 Ultra features a beefy 5,000mAh battery and wireless charging. In our tests, the battery was good for a full day of varied activity (roughly from 7am to 11pm) but not much more (this was the same for mid-range and high-resolution screen settings).

Aside from looking vivid and bright, the Dynamic OLED screen has a new feature called Vision Booster. Samsung says this pushes up detail and contrast in brighter situations, making it easier to see video content. This is certainly an interesting addition for those who watch a lot of Netflix shows in sunny environments, though considering it’s very dreary here in the UK it’s not something I could utilise much. Xclipse is also one of the first mobile GPUs to support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Simply put, this is an advanced method of simulating the way in which light travels around the environment, with more realistic reflections and shadows rendered in real time. However, while this might look pretty great, as we’ve seen with full-fat games consoles and desktop graphics cards, there’s a strong chance that this feature will have a negative impact on frame rate. Samsung seems to be focussing a lot on making the whole S22 range more eco-conscious. It has shrunk down the size of the boxes compared to its predecessors, removed all plastic and committed to using recycled fishing nets in certain parts of the device. Camera With the connection complete, we were able to control our phone through the desktop using our mouse; we even ran Asphalt 9 for a hot second before the connection crashed. Elsewhere, the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes in four flavours. To start with, there’s the “cheapest” model, which comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The further three models all come with 12GB of RAM, with your storage choices being 256GB, 512GB or 1TB. The S22 Ultra doesn’t allow for microSD expansion, so choose wisely.

This is also a gorgeous and quite powerful gaming phone, and handled my Asphalt 9 race through Barcelona without a single hiccup. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the top handset in Samsung’s 2022 flagship range, but this phone could have very easily been called the Galaxy S22 Note. Inside the S22 Ultra there’s a 5000mAh cell, which is paired with an efficient screen and 4nm chipset for good battery life. It doesn’t last anywhere near as long as the iPhone 13 Pro Max though and throughout my week with the phone, I have been charging it on a nightly basis after hitting the red zone just before bed. Granted, I have been pushing the display’s brightness and keeping the 1440p setting enabled. Lower these and you can stretch it further.

Samsung is bringing more focus to its previously-announced Expert RAW app. Similar to the Pro app on Sony’s Xperia I flagship, this is a separate camera app that gives you far more granular control and the ability to shoot in the RAW format. RAW, unlike the JPEG format phones typically shoot in, is uncompressed and allows keen editors to wrangle a better final product out of an initial image. Unless you plan on spending time tweaking an image afterwards in an app like Lightroom, you‘re not really going to see the true benefit of RAW.Samsung’s onboard photo and video-editing capabilities, for example, are strong. We especially like the ability to magically remove an object from a photo, which worked like a charm on a photo of a dozen donuts – instead of eating them, we just selected them one by one and removed them from the original image. The software did leave behind a few telltale artifacts, but you'd be hard-pressed to tell what was there before we digitally removed a donut. The theme of AI runs through a lot of what Samsung is doing with the camera here. It uses artificial intelligence in night photography to steady the camera when you’re shooting video. The tech worked great during testing, offering me very impressive and stable results; automatically switching the frame rate and altering the strength of the bokeh blur in portrait mode as the situation required. Overall, there’s a lot you can do with the S Pen, but it also follows the 80/20 rule – most of us will use 20% of the features, 80% of the time. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Software With a peak brightness of 1750 nits and Samsung’s new Vision Booster technology, the screen does a decent job of maintaining visibility even in direct sunlight. Naturally, though, this means the brightness gets turned up to 100%, which will impact your daily battery life.

It’s worth noting that performance is even better on the newer S23 Ultra, utilising 16-in-1 pixel binning tech to capture even more light, detail and colour than the S22 Ultra. If low-light photography is a focus for you, it might be worth opting for the newer model. If you’re in any doubt that this is a Note in S Series clothing, you need only to press that slight bump on the base and pop out the familiar and light S Pen. It’s all the things a Samsung S Pen should be, giving up nothing for its new Galaxy S22 Ultra home. More on the stylus later. The cameras are completely different, too. This year, there’s a main 108MP sensor, complemented by a pair of 10MP zoom cameras (10x and 3x), as well as a 12MP ultrawide unit. The selfie camera is a 40MP affair, rather than the piddly 10MP sensor found on the S22 and S22 Plus. We started the process on the phone, and then we had to visit a URL on the PC (it was supposed to pop up automatically, but didn’t) where we found a QR code. We pointed the S22 Ultra camera at the code, and the phone then guided us through the rest of the set-up process.

When people say, “So, it’s basically a new Samsung Galaxy Note, right?” we have to flip over the phone to show them the camera array, which is a dead ringer for the one on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. What’s more important though is that Samsung is seriously supporting this phone when it comes to updates. There’s a promise of five years of updates and four major OS updates – that means the S22 Ultra will still be supported when Android 16 rolls around. Considering how many big Android phones only get two major OS updates, this is huge news and shows that investment should last for a number of years. A lot has changed when it comes to the S22 Ultra’s cameras. Featuring a completely redesigned camera module, the S22 Ultra comes with four lenses on the rear: the primary 108MP unit, a 12MP ultrawide with a 120-degree field of view and a pair of 10MP telephoto cameras, with one at 3x optical zoom and the other at a maximum of 10x. A 40MP selfie camera is on the front of the phone. Translation speed may vary depending on internet connection and word count. This function is limited to selected languages. For the full list of languages please visit http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/bixby/vision/ It’s also the brightest panel on a Galaxy yet, with a measured peak luminance of 1,740cd/m² while displaying HDR content, according to our display colorimeter. Predictably, contrast is effectively perfect, too. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra review: Performance and battery life

Virtually every image we shot looked great, even if we did detect a hint of over-saturation (it wouldn’t be Samsung if they didn’t over-saturate the image). In our estimation, the S Pen is a wildly useful implement and, despite its small size (small for this reviewer’s hands anyway), it’s an effective drawing implement. We opened Sketchbook and had a great time drawing, especially because the pen and screen recognize pressure and angle. Where the extra efficiency is most noticeable is with tasks that keep the screen on. I streamed an hour of Netflix in HDR at about 90% brightness, and it drained 10%. Drop the brightness to 60% (which remains very bright) and it took off just 6%. That’s impressive stuff and shows how important these adaptive screens can be. Part of Samsung’s new S22 lineup, but looking nothing like its siblings, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is to the casual observer a Galaxy Note in a shiny, new coat. It does have a much bigger and bolder camera array (lifted pretty much intact from the S21 Ultra), but it’s otherwise a canny adjustment of the Note aesthetic or, as Samsung might call it, the “Note Experience.” Still, this adjustment leaves it as easily the best Samsung phone.
