Three outstanding perfumers, Jordi Fernández, Antoine Maisondieu and Olivier Pescheux, combined their expertise to formulate Montblanc Explorer, each bringing their own knowledge to a specific ingredient that was crucial to the signature of the perfume. Contemporary and cutting-edge, the unconventional woody-aromatic-leather scent is aimed at the adventurer who has no limits. A fusion between technology and craftsmanship, the scent opens with a top note of OrPur Bergamot — a citrus which explodes with green, floral and intensely fresh notes — before immediately revealing its brightness and energy. French OrPur clary sage and spicy Orpur pink pepper add character, Haitian OrPur vetiver oil brings smoky hues and hazelnut-like overtones and a leather accord gives it masculine gravitas. The base features a new type of patchouli of unparalleled quality, developed exclusively for Montblanc fragrances which gives it a new and bewitching woody structure. Cocoa pod and amber-like touches of ambrofix and akigalawood, (an exclusive molecule) gradually bring some gentle heat to the fragrance. Officina profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, with more than 800 years of history under its belt, is one of the oldest perfumery-businesses still operating today. Its latest collection of fragrances, I Giardini Medicei, pays tribute to the olfactory gardens of the Medici dynasty and rediscovers the Florentine brand’s botanical roots. Composed by Gian Luca Perris, Officina’s maître perfumer, our favourite from the collection of four perfumes is Bizzarria; described as an ode to singularity. Intriguing from the offset, it is inspired by gardens at the Villa Medicea di Castello, where in the 16th century the Medici family started to cultivate citrus fruits and were amongst the earliest to grow lemons, oranges and bergamot. The scent opens with a big, bold ‘Bizzarria’ accord of bitter orange, lemon and etrog (a citrus fruit rarely used in perfumery), seasoned with timur pepper and the unmistakable sweetness of neroli. Heart notes of orange blossom absolute, davana and ginger add to its spirited character before taking its foot off the pedal on a base of cedar-wood and musk. Eau de Cologne was a significant turning point in men’s grooming, as it introduced the idea of using fragrances as part of a daily routine. Before Eau de Cologne, men typically only used fragrances for special occasions. This was the beginning of the Art of the After Shave, and what we know today as Men’s Grooming.
