5.      An integrated sharpener

If you are of the woodworking persuasion, you might have access to a suite of woodworking tools, and could perhaps select one of the more diminutive planes from your collection and apply it liberally to the art of pencil sharpening. You could do that, but you didn’t hear it from me. Like with most other sharpeners, you’ll begin sharpening your pencil by placing it in the aperture at the front. With a crank sharpener the pencil is held in the hole using a clip mechanism that releases from the front of the machine. You can usually activate this via a pincer grip that protrudes slightly from the top of the sharpener. As you turn the crank the pencil will feed into the sharpener. There are many different ways to sharpen a pencil, and everyone is convinced that theirs is the best. Here I will discuss some of the more popular methods of wood shaping and graphite forming, including when, where, and why you might choose one over the other, how each is done, and a specific suggestion for the sharpener to use with each respective approach. The Knife A handheld, manual sharpener is the simplest of all artists’ sharpening tools. These basic sharpeners are usually made from metal, plastic or wood and are likely to be the types of sharpeners you might have first enountered at school. This type of sharpener is commonly available with either a single or double hole. Single hole sharpeners have one aperture – usually this will fit a standard pencil. However, there are single hole sharpeners that have a larger hole suitable for jumbo pencils (like the M+R Giant Pencil Sharpener) or for uniquely shaped pencils (like the Lyra Groove Sharpeners). Double hole sharpeners usually have one aperture for standard pencils and another for larger than standard pencils. Reservoir Pencil Sharpeners These blades can get blunt, so they should be replaced when this happens. This should be easy to do by removing the screws that hold the blades down. Some of the sharpeners have a single hole for the pencil, but a double hole is a better option. This provides a hole for smaller pencils and larger pencils. The manual sharpener is okay for everyday writing and drawing, as it is cheap, safe to use, and portable. However, if you are not careful, you can land up with an irregular pencil point, and it might not make the grade for seasoned artists who are looking for something better.

There is another similar type of pencil sharpener that is also desk-bound. The mechanical sharpener or rotary sharpener looks similar to the electric version, the only difference is you have to manually turn a lever to sharpen the pencil, which offers more control than the electric sharpeners. These are perfect for sharpening both graphite as well as colored pencils. Both mechanical and electric sharpeners cannot be carried around, as they are too big. Do not over-sharpen a pencil, as it can lead to breakage. If you want a finer point, rather use sandpaper to achieve this. Manual crank sharpeners, also sometimes referred to as helical sharpeners, have a completely different sharpening mechanism to pencil sharpeners with a single blade. These pencil sharpeners tend to be large and often bulky, so not very portable or suitable for outdoor work. You’re best keeping them in the studio, or in a room where you prefer to create your artwork. You can also mount most of our models onto a desk, giving them a bit more stability during sharpening. What's important is how we learn from them. Yet, children are growing up in a society that pressures them to be perfect and intelligent - to achieve the highest exam results, win scholarships, attend the best universities (however that is defined). Some parents reinforce this pressure at home when they cover up children's mistakes, correct homework or insist their children always get it right. We know through research that stress is increased when children are constantly praised for their intelligence and where the focus is on perfection.
