About this deal

They have three farms in Devon, Wales and Gloucestershire, open to inner city school children who come to stay and work with the animals. He was awarded an OBE in 2007 and a Knighthood in the New Year’s Honours in 2018 for services to literature and charity. Through Lily's diary entries the reader gets to know what it was like to live in wartime Britain, which, I believe, makes this book perfect for introducing young readers to the concept of war, death and loss, but also true friendship and love. Sir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films.

To top it all off, her village is full of American soldiers or gum chewing “ruddy Yanks” as her grandfather refers to them.He hates the war, having served in the trenches of World War I and never got over what he had witnessed then.

He sits outside the series-driven blockbusters so beloved of publishers nowadays: he hasn't created a Harry Potter or an Alex Rider – and I admire him for resisting that. Lily tells the story from just before her 12th birthday; her father has joined the army and gone away to war and she lives with her mum and grandfather on their family’s farm with her beloved cat Tips. There, they are told that they must all leave the area for a while because the beach and village are needed for the soldiers to practice landings at sea for the coming invasion of France. Two American soldiers befriend the girl and try to help her find her beloved cat Tips, who is left behind in the move.Set in the village of Slapton on the south coast of England during the Second World War, this story from master storyteller Morpurgo tells the tale of Lily Tregenza and how she, her family and her cat cope with rationing, evacuation, hope and grief. He has an unerring moral compass – his schoolteacher past has never quite left him – and books such as War Horse and The Butterfly Lion have a strong social concience and an honesty that makes them universal. They become good friends and despite her home being out of bounds, Lily and her new friend don’t give up and do all they can to find their beloved cat, Tips. There are lot more evacuees in Slapton, including Barry Turner, whose dad was killed in the war and who keeps smiling at Lily.
