Reconsidering another book by this author I once read, It's Kind of a Funny Story, I realize that the two female characters that were love interests, were also portrayed with this misogynistic attitude. He hears about a pill, a “squip,” that is a microcomputer that will give him instructions on how to be cool (or “more chill”). The thing where they made the squip evil in the musical didn't sit right with me and this does it much better.

Also a lot of the more adult elements had been taken out like "Michael in the bathroom" and stuff like drinking and smoking weed and just normal teen-age delinquency. Which is saying something, because I thought the musical was a little boring with the musical numbers. On December 18, 2018, it was announced that the entire Off-Broadway cast would reprise their roles for the Broadway production.
