About this deal

Discover first editions and limited editions of Asimov’s most famous books, including the Foundation Series and the Robot Series. There were a few references to people and things that I was not familiar with, rendering the description useless. As I said a good choice for a day by the pool and if you can get past the most unlikely events happening you will enjoy the book, 3/5 for me.

The old man and the sea is great fiction but not sure it compares with The Long Way or some of the other non fiction books about solo sailing. In fact, if you are a speed reader then this is the perfect book for you; no depth, lazy writing, no development of characters. Katherine inherited a 100 million when her philandering husband died in a boating accident a few years previously on the same yacht. The Long Way is Bernard Moitessier‘s own incredible story of his participation in the first Golden Globe Race, a solo, non-stop circumnavigation rounding the three great Capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin, and the Horn.

It is pretty obvious that those 16 competitors are not „holiday sailors“ – they have been preparing for this race for months and they even hired some sleep specialists to achieve better results. At 18 years old, Tania Aebi was going nowhere, until her father presented her with an ultimatum: she could go to college or get a boat. Considered one of the greatest adventurers of our time, Tilman has sailed and climbed in some of the world’s most remote and environments.

Once you finish devouring this story, you are going to want to tell everyone you know about this awesome book. John McPhee, considered one of the pioneers of creative nonfiction, recounts a 42-day journey from Charleston down the Pacific coast of South America on one of the last American merchant ships, the S. Also of interest to handicapped sailors, Jones lost a leg to diabetes on one of his crossings, but kept sailing for many years afterwards. It would be an interesting account even if it were written today but is especially so due to the fact that the events he recounts take place prior to the 20th century.

She chose the latter and for the next two and a half years and 27,000 miles, she sailed the world with only her cat as a companion. As told by the defense lawyer, Vincent Bugliosi (who also prosecuted Charles Manson), the investigation that follows is a riveting true-crime murder mystery. On top of all of this, the novel switches from a third person omniscient narrator to a first person account by the mother and although it was not confusing it grated on my nerves. Then, nearing the finish, Moitessier pulled out of the race and sailed on for another three months before ending his 37,455-mile journey in Tahiti.

literally, the authors give a paragraph synopsis about each character, giving their name, age, weaknesses and a bit of back story. New Zealander, Tom Neale travels to Suwarrow, a remote South Pacific atoll, and spends 16 years living alone and off the land.I mean, I'm a very impatient person and I love short clipped sentences and sometimes I can appreciate a startlingly short chapter if it's done for effect. Within the first forty-five pages the oldest child attempts to commit suicide, the oldest boy gets high, we learn the brother-in-law is in love with the mother and always has been, the boat begins to sink and there is a hired killer after them the minute they leave the dock. The back story is never fleshed out for us as it could have been and the characters are decidely one-dimensional. A 41-year-old, after sailing right into a terrible storm, woke up to find out her fiance was gone and the land was nowhere in sight.
