About this deal

It can really get the 'slug world' moving, and for those already engaged in study it should provide the means to approach identification with a new confidence. As a teacher, I appreciate how Slug in Love can be used to spark discussions about emotions, friendship, and self-acceptance in the classroom. When we’re all grown-up, sometimes we just need a little nudge to remember it’s been there all along.

Read all the way, see the notes at the end (telling you a few things you should see or could see if you look). McNish tackles topics which might be considered squeamish, even taboo, by British society, the kind of stuff we are told not to discuss growing up even though we desperately want to because it’s intrinsic to our lives – bodily functions and desires, for starters – alongside barely more socially acceptable outpourings of grief, bewilderment and common sense. Julie Jenkins, receptionist for the council offices where Brady works, takes a message from pensioner Mrs. We see various insects that have all the reasons not to hug Doug, but then he meets another snail (whose name and house I loved, come on, if I was a slug I would so have a house like that) and you would think that it may work out… well I am not telling. Students are able to recognize the pattern of the “s” sound, and this leads to conversations and lessons on reading and writing using alliteration.Mike Brady and his wife Kim are doing some gardening when Brady is attacked by slugs who try to bite his hand. A warm and endearing rhyming text by Rachel Bright ( Love Monster, The Lion Inside) is perfectly paired with funny and fabulous illustrations by Nadia Shireen ( Good Little Wolf, Billy and the Beast) in this adorable future classic. I just simply adored the amount of character that Nadia Shireen manages to get into the simple illustrations.

From Finnish saunas and soppy otters to grief, grandparents and Kellogg's anti-masturbation pants, Slug is a book which holds a mirror lovingly up to the world, past and present, through Hollie's driving, funny, hopeful poetry and prose. It sparked conversations about emotions, friendship, and expressing oneself, making it a meaningful addition to our bedtime reading routine. The British and Irish slug fauna has changed rapidly over recent years as exotic species join our native wildlife. This is a book which should grace the bookshelves at home and at school and it is definitely for sharing and reading aloud: young children will just love Doug as will their teachers, parents and anyone who might happen to pick it up. Thankfully, in 2014 the publication of a new slug guide should help to resolve many of these issues.
