I did like the whole idea of rural violence against women in particular but it developed so late in the story as to almost be an excuse for the plot, rather than a driver. The author blends mystery with an incredibly atmospheric setting which he really brings to life with his lyrical and descriptive writing. One sneaks out while the other dozes in the corner, his dirty boots falling off his feet, the night outside preferable to these four walls.

I enjoyed getting to know Jake and seeing his interactions with the existing residents in this tiny area of the countryside. For a debut crime fiction novel, this is really amazing and totally up there with the best… think Jane Harper but set in the undulating hills of the green and lush English countryside. There are shades of Before I Go to Sleep, SJ Watson’s debut novel about a woman with amnesia, in Hannah Beckerman’s The Forgetting (Lake Union), but that’s no bad thing: Beckerman gives the amnesia trope her own twist to create a compelling, claustrophobic story. I’m a bit of a newbie to the crime detective genre and the pace was a slow burn, but I can confirm I was satisfied with how the plot escalates as the case draws to a head, the last few chapters had me gripped and the realisation over what’s been happening in the calm, cosy, peaceful village is unsettling to say the least! He has that nothing-to-lose attitude, given that his career is swirling down the toilet bowl anyway.
