Elmo’s character was portrayed by Jerry Nelson between 1980 to 1981, and later on, Richard Hunt took that job over from 1984 to 1985. Though the design of the character was established from the beginning, some differences from the current Elmo puppet include a darker orange nose, bulkier lower jaw, and smaller pupils, positioned in a way that often make the character appear cross-eyed.

Clash’s performance was so inspiring that Jim Martin, John Tartaglia, and Matt Vogel provided the movement of Elmo’s legs and arms in green screenshots. Clash was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 17, 1960, the third of four children born to George Clash, a flash welder and handyman, and Gladys Clash, who ran a small daycare center in their two-bedroom, one-bath home in the Turner Station area of Dundalk, Maryland.
