They key thing about Punpun, in this volume and any others, is that I can feel the shitty realness of it. Punpun is sure Aiko must've chickened out their trip to Kagoshima just as the taxi passes by City Hall, where a crying and rejected Aiko stands alone. It's very dark, which isn't a problem for me, but if nothing else I'm constantly feeling like on some level I'm not really understanding what I'm reading. Seki has a flashback to when he was younger and his dad brought him to the miso factory to get supplies.

School starts up again, but Punpun doesn't feel like talking to his classmates, and Aiko is noticeably sullen. Punpun found himself slowly, slowly traversing the memories scattered about here and there that made up his very short life.They have a lunch at the newly opened cafe, and Yuuichi recognizes the waitress, Midori, from somewhere.

She tells the kids they can stay but to watch out for the ghost of the owner who committed suicide by fire. Punpun's class cleans up for the end of semester while Punpun dreads breaking his promise to Aiko, who will kill him. With the cult storyline taking on a bigger role, I begin to wonder if Punpun will make it out okay - and if, at this point, that's even possible. This is a dissonant set of moods and experimental storytelling that somehow works cohesively, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes next! She explains she comes here for privacy and that the wound on her head is just a blow from her father, something she's used to.

I'd be fine with her being his ultimate final partner in life, but I don't think that's in the cards (too many volumes left). Even when I felt like I was reading Bakuman towards the end of the volume, I didn't mind because I love Bakuman. Sachi Nanjo provides a nice, funny foil to Punpun, making this the least-depressing volume of the series. On their way home, Harumi gives his six-speed bike to Punpun and his playstation controller to Komatsu and promises to find more porn by next time they hang out. God, I'm so done with PunPun, he's so desperate to fuck Aiko but he doesn't do shit, honestly if you're going to be like that just forget about her, it's been two fucking years and you couldn't even look at her, just forget it.

Punpun realizes he won't be able to bring Aiko to Kagoshima, but he squeezes her hand, and when a shooting star passes them overhead, he hopes to see this same sky again someday. Maybe the snow is making Punpun lose sight of his true goal, and he's lost in a winter wonderland dream? This is one of my favorite manga series, if not my favorite, as I've said many times before, and I just love how dark it is. I feel kind of bad giving this volume 4 stars because nothing hugely tragic happened to our main all star Punpun but, hey, it is what it is.
