Elizabethans, "Truth and Legend: The Veracity of John Foxe's Book of Martyrs" 2003:151–77, balances the authentic records and rhetorical presentation of Foxe's Acts and Monuments, itself a mighty force of Protestant legend-making. Like many silent protagonists in video games, Link does not speak, only producing grunts, yells, or similar sounds. Traditional tales often hinge on ethical or moral issues, or they permit insight into the way other people think. It has been ranked the seventh-greatest game by Electronic Gaming Monthly, whereas Ocarina of Time was ranked eighth.

These two games became Oracle of Ages, which is more puzzle-based, and Oracle of Seasons, which is more action-oriented. Another historical outlaw of John's time suffered similar identity problems even during his lifetime, but he dealt with them in no uncertain fashion. In retaliation, Fulk kicked John in the stomach, and when John went crying to his father, it was John who was beaten for complaining. It refers imaginary events to some real personage, or it localizes romantic stories in some definite spot. According to Miyamoto, one of his most memorable experiences was the discovery of a cave entrance in the middle of the woods.
