About this deal

Via a varied cast, Nesbo passes comment on the big and little changes in Norwegian society, vintage rock music, Oslo neighbourhoods and the city’s modern architecture.

I would be more worried if there was an absence of violence against women in fiction because it’s a problem in real life…Harry Hole borrows a lot from the tradition of the hard-boiled detective novel, and with that comes certain traditions. So he didn’t slow down, and the other man must have realised Harry’s intention, because he let go of Lucille and reached for something behind him. In the unlikeliest team-up ever, corrupt cop Truls Berntsen, a favourite in Police, becomes Harry’s ally.

They topped the charts in Norway, but Nesbo continued working as a financial analyst, crunching numbers during the day and gigging at night. It has a ticking-clock urgency to it, and the author swings to and fro between key and secondary characters – and key bits of action – which makes for a lively and stimulating read.

But there is more to this case than meets the eye and the clock is ticking to find the missing woman, before the body count rises. Two young women are missing, their only connection a party they both attended, hosted by a notorious real-estate magnate. Jo Nesbo is an author who strives for originality when it comes to setting up a climax, and in Killing Moon he delivers a belter during a late summer lunar eclipse over Oslo. Harry also knew that a physical intervention was unavoidable, and that the first rule in close combat was simple: don’t wait, he who attacks first and with maximum aggression wins. A deeply troubled, damaged, narcissistic and thoroughly irredeemable individual, even though we get to understand Prim, there’s no way you’ll feel sympathy for this one.Did you read how everyone ‘praised’ her after she came forward and spoke about how Weinstein, that pig, had tried it on with her? Meanwhile, back in Oslo, two women have disappeared after attending a party held by billionaire property developer Markus Røed. He almost closed his eyes and squeezed his fingers around the credit card, so his hand formed a chisel. Running towards the door, he burst it open with his elbow, was blinded by sunlight and almost stumbled on the two steps down from the porch.

In between, Lily and Atlas steal away for romantic moments that are even sweeter for their authenticity as Lily struggles with child care, breastfeeding, and running a business while trying to find time for herself. I was there in the beginning when the first novel featuring his rebellious and brilliant Norwegian police officer, The Bat, came out in 1997. Norwegian sleuth Hole has left the Oslo police after a tragedy and relocated, broke and despondent, to sunny California. It’s a woman in need, a woman who reminds him of his mother and in trying to save her he actually saves himself. I think when you’re Uma Thurman, millionaire actor, and you’ve known what Weinstein’s been up to without blowing the whistle, that when you finally step forward to kick a man when he’s down, who other less powerful and braver women have brought down, that you shouldn’t be praised. The camaraderie of this team is one of the most pleasing aspects of the book – a counter to Harry’s angst, grief and battle with alcoholism.

Inspector Katrine Bratt, head of the Oslo Police Department’s Crime Squad, desperately wants the help of her ex-lover, a terrible cop who’s also the country’s leading authority on serial killers, when Susanne Andersen and Bertine Bertilsen, both of whom have gone missing, turn up dead and disfigured in a truly ghoulish manner. Killing Moon is not just an unbearably tense thriller but another of Nesbø’s studies in love and loneliness. He's an international number one bestseller and his books are published in 50 languages, selling over 55 million copies around the world. His Harry Hole novels include The Redeemer, The Snowman, The Leopard and Phantom, and he is also the author of several stand-alone novels and the Doctor Proctor series of children’s books. Here’s a taste of that, and if this isn’t the author projecting his women-hating fantasies upon his characters, then what is it?
