This clever box grater, another OXO product, includes a medium grater, coarse grater, slicer, and removable zester. It would be fine for occasional use, but a dedicated zester might be preferred if a lot of zesting is on the menu. Box graters can be tricky and a little dangerous to clean, so if you are worried about how to wash it or that you might injure yourself, seek one out that can be put in the dishwasher. While a mandoline is often safer to use than a knife, it is still extremely sharp and can be dangerous if you don’t use it properly. The grater itself has three grating sides, one open side, and two grippable sides which are needed since there’s no handle.

You might think a peeler is just a peeler, but the super-sharp, precision stainless steel blades on this range make them completely effortless – we’d go so far as to say they actually make peeling a pleasure.

Before julienning the carrots, you may want to use a Y-peeler to remove the skin, particularly if it’s very thick. While this does need slightly more storage space, the benefit is that it’s easier to get a hand inside the grater to retrieve stuck-in food, and it’s also easier to get a sponge inside for hand washing. This is sturdy and reliable, but even if you experience any trouble, OXO has a “Better Guarantee” policy, meaning that it will repair or replace products with issues.

Some of this, of course, could also be accomplished with some pro-level knife skills, but if you’d rather have a grater do the work for you, this is an excellent option. Just note that you should be extra careful when using this grater because it will grate your hand just as easily as it will grate that block of aged cheese. The grater also has a rounded, slightly padded handle, so it was comfortable to hold onto during our tests. Plus, it has features that do make it easy to use, such as a top handle and stainless steel construction to keep things rust-free. You’ll have the easiest time julienning pieces that are approximately 3- to 4-inches (8 to 10 cm) long or smaller.

Developed in Japan, they’re really efficient and literally glide with the lightest touch, taking off a wafer-thin peeling so you don’t waste any of the fruit or veg.
