About this deal

It performs best when shot at the box speed of ISO 100 and does perform slightly better overexposed than underexposed. This is one of the few films that I’ve shot which gives me consistent results that I’ve pretty much expected. During my journey with the film I have shot it in 35mm, 120, and recently 4x5 with subjects ranging from people, landscapes, and street/candids.

First Impressions: Kodak Ektar 100 Review - The Analogue

Continuing this obsession, I decided to combine the two treatments of yellow and blue by taking a roll of medium format Ektar to a brick railroad bridge crossing over the Delaware River. With the composition we wanted to created, I had him wear a short sleeve hoodie with a bandana and walk along the train tracks. The vivid colours that are its strength and that make your landscapes and flowers pop will often make skin tones too red. Kodak specifies that the film is workable to one stop under and two stops over, though Ektar can do better than that. Even with all that in mind there are perhaps few pleasures as wonderful as holding a positive image in hand. After more than a decade without Ektar, in 2008 Kodak applied the famous name to a new slow-speed, ultra-fine, professional-grade 35mm film.

I’ve no hard data, of course, but it seems that Ektar is making a comeback and getting the recognition it deserves. The scene was dominated by shades of blue, speckled with rocks lining the sea providing yellows and browns. Get loco in Acapulco with your new fisheye friend, dressed in a one-of-a-kind striped fabric design, to capture your wildest adventures in an incredible 170° fisheye view! In this image, you can see the vibrance of the blues in Melissa’s dress as the warm morning sunlight flows through it. As seen in Figure 1 above, underexposed photographs are likely to shift towards the blues, whereas additional exposure tends to improve an overall colour balance.

However, for the general film photographer, I think either Kodak Gold 200, Kodak ColorPlus 200, Kodak Ultramax 400, and even Kodak Portra 400 are better values. They represent 3 different types of architecture in essence, which are modernism, classic and abandoned.

And while Ektar’s colors burst from the page like fireworks, the film manages to avoid rendering colors in an overzealous way. The red flags, green trees and yellow helmet on the third image are other examples of the high saturation. If washed out and faded colors bother you, shoot properly-exposed or over-exposed shots and you’ll make images that are simply perfect. The two recipes each produce a different look, and perhaps they both have a place, depending on what exact aesthetic you are after. For me, it’s made for compositions where the final image will look different (a good different) from the real world. Personally, I have seen many people shoot both films for specific purposes - landscapes for Ektar and Portra for portraits - make sense so far?
