About this deal

An inspiring guide to creating a flexible, seven-piece wardrobe with modern Scandinavian elegance, from style icon Lotta JansdotterWhen Jansdotter wears one of her signature clothing looks, fans frequently ask, "Did you make that? Erityisesti hameen ohjeet ja kuvat olivat aika suurpiirteiset, joten ei välttämättä aloittelijalle helpoin teos. I appreciated that the items are meant to be ageless; they just as easily suit Lotta's twelve-year-old model as her 86-year-old one. I fully expected to find this book as useless as the two other Lotta Jansdotter books I've checked out from the library, but this was a pleasant surprise.

I found tracing the pattern I selected very difficult; after reading other reviews claiming the garments didn't fit properly, I didn't want to waste time or fabric. It's not bad but it's certainly nothing to get all excited about, unless you want to get a few extremely basic patterns, including patterns for a tote bag and a couple of basic purses. Whenever I check out a book from my library that includes the actual patterns the instructions are overwhelming. Photographed by Jenny Hallengren over the course of a year in her life in New York, Tennessee, India, and Sweden and organized by season, Jansdotter shares her sources of inspiration and how she and her friends mix and match her key pieces while working, playing, resting, and traveling.I found the patterns to be too basic, they also needed a huge amount of adjustment for such basic styles, so not easy and simple at all! I very much enjoyed her sense of style though, and the infectious cheerleading for the style of her friends and readers. I have read a lot of sewing books written by talented designers, and this book is one is one of my favorites. The patterns are simple, in a peasant-y, Scandi-Japanese way, in aesthetic, but classic enough to suit all kinds of styles and people.

My one complaint is the patterns are all on four sheets of paper and overlap so much it's hard to tell where each pattern is without looking at the guide at the back of the book. An inspiring guide to creating a flexible, seven-piece wardrobe with modern Scandinavian elegance, from style icon Lotta Jansdotter. The patterns are a total hassle to trace as they overlay each other and the directions are pretty sparse for a beginner at clothes making. The photos are beautiful and work taking a deep look at, especially those showing her sketches, mood board, and design wall. You are not tied into a contract which means if you change your mind, there are no cancellation fees. Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Patterns is all about flexible, customizable garments to wear in your nest and in your neighborhood, and easy, fun ways to alter each one as the season-or your mood-changes. When Lotta Jansdotter steps out in one of her signature outfits, fans always ask, “Did you make that yourself? The pictures are beautiful, the text engaging, the textiles (mostly) to my taste, the stories of textile travels make me want to follow. They offered valuable insight into creating along with sharing tips from their experiences with fabrics. Into it, although the sheets the patterns are crammed onto look like a [fx: Jean Ralphio croon] hooooottttt meeessssss. Primarily this is a book about Lotta Jansdotter herself with lots and lots of pictures of her studio and her friends and miscellaneous bits of craft, with some very basic patterns included.

The book contains five basic clothing patterns that can be customized into twelve different items (three skirts, two tops, a coat, a jacket, three dresses, one pair of shorts and one of pants), as well as directions for a few sewn accessories as well (bags, scarves, jewelry). With this pattern I had to lengthen the waistband several inches even though my waist measurement is within the size range I picked. The styles are mostly shapeless, which is not to my taste but does work for many people so that's not a reason to give a bad review. I don't recommend any pattern book for beginning sewists because the details aren't spelled out enough to allow for good learning, but this pattern book has beginner-level patterns with it.

Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style brings Jansdotter’s infectious and sought-after sense of style to new followers and longtime devotees alike. However, as others have mentioned, the patterns themselves are overlayered in a chaotic way that rather kills the desire to use them. I'm fond of Japanese Pattern books (like those by Yoshiko Tsukiori) so perhaps I just expected too much from this book.
