About this deal

When tasted, it presents crisp apple and lime flavors that transition into a bold and sweet blue agave taste, with a finish characterized by spices and a touch of oak. First impression is that this is a decent reposado, in that the agave is more present than oak, probably due to use of large casks and/or short aging period. Pernod Ricard USA has completed its roll out of Olmeca Altos Tequila across the US, almost three years after first launching the super-premium brand in the States. Each tequila has its own "flavor fingerprint," and each person has his or her own flavor preferences.

This doesn't have as much of the "green" flavor the Plata has, something I could do without, but I wish the flavors were more pronounced here. Whiskey and wine barrels have always been the popular choice for tequila makers, but bourbon seems to have lent its own unique mark to Olmeca Altos Tequila’s Reposado expression. As the world rediscovers diversity in the spirits world, the second-use barrel market is reaping the benefits. If you are using a shared computer that may be used by someone under the legal alcohol purchase age, it is not recommended you use the "Remember Me" function. While Olmeca Altos is undeniably good, it falls short of being classified as a premium Tequila, a designation reserved for only a select few. Olmeca Altos says that between seven and eight years after planting, the agave is harvested, cooked in a brick oven, and then pulped using the traditional, but now rare, tahoma method, of “crushing the cooked pinas with a two-ton volcanic millstone, to draw out the sweet juice and syrup from the fibers. A bit sharper (wrong word, but somehow it felt localized to a few areas, so sharp as in ‘concentrated and intense’, but not as in ‘burning’) alcohol feel in the mouth when holding it on the tongue than I though I got with the Don Julio. Our Tequila is aged in ex-bourbon casks for at least 5 months, its sweet aroma with a touch of smoke is sure to make your night golden.

Traditional production methods are used, from slow-cooking the agave in brick ovens and crushing the agave using a tahona stone, as it was 500 years ago. Using smaller barrels creates a more complex profile, perfectly balanced, keeping its unique tequila taste. That means the soil and growing conditions have more impact on the final product than fermentation, distillation and aging combined. Nonetheless, the quality and value offered by Olmeca Altos make it a worthy addition to anyone looking for an affordable Tequila for mixed drinks. Olmeca Añejo stands out among other affordable añejos for its lighter, more natural-tasting profile.

Altos Tequila is made using a traditional method of crushing the agave plants with a two-ton tahona stone, which helps preserve the agave’s natural sweetness better than the roller mill. The cooked agave is there on nose and palate, that grassiness I get from the blanco is rounded out with a little caramel and oak. Here, I’m not just sharing opinions; I’m weaving tales from the rich tapestry of my experiences over these three decades. It appears that additives are either restrained or absent, making it an excellent choice for mixing. On the palate, it offers a pleasant sweetness of caramel, accompanied by hints of oak char, almond, cinnamon, and a touch of mint. In this case, the tequila Reposado will improve both your Blue Margaritas and your Skinny Margarita. The insights I’ve gained aren’t just from books or hearsay; they are the result of hands-on experience, countless tastings, and an enduring passion for these spirits.
