About this deal

Roger was one of those rare people whose character and passion is to be found in everything he made, collected, drew or wrote.

Deakin only published a single book in his lifetime: Waterlog was hugely successful and one of the foundational texts for the whole wild swimming movement. She’s down to clown with anything campy and ridiculous, but you can also find her reviewing thought-provoking projects like The Starling Girl, Annika, and Mister Organ. Known for his work with filmmakers like the Coen Brothers and Denis Villeneuve, Deakins has over eighty cinematography credits to his name, and has been inducted into both the American and British Society of Cinematographers. He's nominated for what could be his third Oscar this year for his part in Sam Mendes' Empire of Light. Images from the book have not yet been released, but if Deakins’ career as a cinematographer is any indication, the work is set to be spectacular. He begins his quest, as he comes to think of it, in the moat of his own old house in Suffolk, breaststroking through a thunderstorm, experiencing a "frog's eye view of rain on the moat" and watching each raindrop as it "exploded in a momentary, bouncing fountain that turned into a bubble and burst". The DP had initially been interested in documentary photography, so he worked on the same genre of documentaries as a budding cinematographer.

I grew convinced that following water, flowing with it, would be a way of getting under the skin of things, of learning something new.My paintings were fairly naturalistic, just based on things that I’d seen, so it made sense to have a camera and photograph the things I saw. The book will feature images that Deakins has rarely shared with others and which span 50 years, according to the announcement.

I used to hitchhike to various locations and spend the day with my camera,” recounts the cinematographer of the twenty-third Bond film, Skyfall. He started one of the first digital camera classes in New York City at The International Center of Photography in the 90s. Some of the images in this book, such as those from Rapa Nui, New Zealand and Australia, he took whilst traveling with James.

After graduating from college Deakins spent a year photographing life in rural North Devon, in Southwest England, on a commission for the Beaford Arts Centre; these images are gathered here for the first time and attest to a keenly ironic English sensibility, while also documenting a vanished postwar Britain.

His archive has been given to the University of East Anglia, including writings on ancient trees, along with film banks, photographs, journals and Deakin's swimming trunks. Roger Deakins helped shoot over half of the Coen Brothers filmography so far, including Fargo and O Brother, Where Art Thou and No Country for Old Men.
