Sovereignty: Organized Hypocrisy is a book with a provocative theme that is tracked through a variety of interesting cases to a conclusion that may help to clarify contemporary discussions of a central theoretical and practical issue in the discipline. As some of the constitutive dimensions of sovereignty are addressed in the context of the principle of sovereign equality under the UN Charter, and since the sovereignty-correlative principles or institutions of international law mentioned in the first paragraph are discussed separately in corresponding entries (eg Self-Determination; Subjects of International Law), the present entry focuses on foundational issues and questions relative to the development of the international legal system more generally. Vanessa Ogle, 'Archipelago Capitalism: Tax Havens, Offshore Money, and the State, 1950s-1970s,' American Historical Review 122 (2017): 1431-1458. The convenor will provide students with a list of potential titles, or students can devise their own titles so long as they are approved in writing with the convenor. There is an admirable lack of determinism in Tombs’s framing of Britain’s relations with Europe: “Is there a pattern in this long and complex story of the relations between our offshore islands and the Continent? There, sovereignty is conceived as limited and law-based, but only because this equates with being self-limited by consent-based legal rules. Since its origins, the content and implications of the concept of sovereignty have constantly evolved.Seen differently, the sovereigns behind international law are peoples within States, and no longer States only. But if the referendum is the sacred moment of the exercise of sovereignty, why were the sovereign people not told in 2016 that, as Tombs insists, the only form of Brexit they were going to get was one of the most extreme imaginable?
