About this deal

This book could be used in literacy when teaching children about poetry or rhyming as the whole story uses rhyming words. Because I loved the other two Jolly Postman books so much, I felt that I should read the final book in the set. In this story the postman gets a bang to his head and goes on an adventure where he meets Alice in Wonderland and Dorothy!

The Jolly Postman or Other People's Letters is an interactive children's picture book by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.

The Jolly Postman's morning is set off course when he suffers a bump to the head before he shrinks to the size of a postage stamp . Everyone's favorite postman finds himself in Alice's Wonderland, knee-high to a Mad Hatter, but nothing can stop the Jolly Postman from completing his mail route as he travels through the Emerald City with Dorothy and other fairy-tale favorites. With the mixture of the story and different resources it means the children interact with the story as well as take part in the activities within the book.

Join the jolly postman with his mailbag of delightful deliveries for Dorothy from Oz, Alice from Wonderland, and other favorite storybook characters. Use these fantastic 'The Jolly Postman' activities, colouring sheets and games to plan fun and engaging lessons for your KS1 students.Alternatively, The Jolly Postman is a series of three books including 1991 and 1995 sequels to The Jolly Postman, or Other people's letters. The Jolly Pocket Postman incorporates other stories, like Alice and Wonderland and Little red riding hood, The Wizard of Oz, The gingerbread man and Rapunzel. Due to the fact that there are lots of additional parts to the book which may get lost, it may be better suited to a class reading activity, although it could be read by the children to the class as opposed to the teacher reading. The Federation of Children's Book Groups award (now named for the bookseller Red House) "celebrate[s] the books that children themselves love reading".

I especially recommend it to today's children who might not have as much knowledge and experience about the post service and old fashioned books like Alice in Wonderland. Your students can get involved in the making of your displays by contributing their own work to be put on the classroom wall. Small quarto hardback colour illustrated (all letters are present in their respective envelopes including the magnifying glass). It would be suitable for Early Years, however it is unlikely that they would be able to read it all. I love how intricate and complex yet satisfyingly simple for a little one The Jolly Pocket Postman story is with references to fairy tales, The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.I thought it referenced the ‘row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream’ nursery rhyme, but then why the walkie talkie in the illustration and phone bill? The popular children’s book by Janet and Allan Alhberg is brought to life in a literacy learning resource licensed by Penguin books. From 1982 to 1999 the "Emil" figurines from Maschler publishers and BookTrust annually recognised the creator(s) of one "work of imagination for children, in which text and illustration are integrated so that each enhances and balances the other". It may therefore be more suitable as a whole class story, encouraging individual children to take it in turn to take the letters out of the envelopes as the story progresses.
