About this deal
As a mystery it kept me engaged, though I felt that the ‘aha’ moments didn’t always live up to expectation.

Stonex's descriptions of storms and the sea are wonderful, in fact her sense of place in her writing is great, and I really felt what it was like inside the lighthouse. Secrets and deceptions emerge that leads to anger, resentment, and even madness with a supernatural element. But it wasn’t only tough on the keepers, their wives were living in close quarters as well, separate from others but close to each other, forced into each other’s pockets so to speak. And it made me cry, the devastation and the way in which a moment in time can take so much, destroy a love, change the direction of your life, and wound irreparably. Even stranger, the Principal Keeper's log indicates a fearsome, raging storm when the weather was calm.
The Lamplighters by Emma Stonex audiobook review – a spooky
Stonex is excellent on the tensions between the three men: laid-back Vince trying to outrun a violent past, Arthur, the principal keeper who has done the job so well and who cannot bring himself to quit because of a terrible secret, and taciturn Bill, whose silence hides a melancholy streak.Out of respect to those men and their families, I didn’t wish to muddy the waters between fact and fiction. The author dug deep into this with all of the characters, examining the type of people they were and the effects the lighthouse life had on each of them. The story ends with Helen looking out at the Maiden Rock, envisioning the Principal Keeper climbing the stairs, his face lifted to the light. Meanwhile Varma gives voice to the widows who appear no closer to understanding what happened to their partners, and who have each reacted to their loss in different ways. I’ve read many positive reviews of this novel on Goodreads but it was my friend, Daniel Shindler’s review, that made me determined to read this one.
