I did guess the outcome and there was some predictability but nevertheless this novel is beautifully written and evocative of time and place, just what you need for these long dark evenings. A ghastly encapsulation of the existentialist adage that ‘hell is other people’, Beckett’s bleak vision is deeply shadowed by the lingering spectres of totalitarianism. We are encouraged to see the opposing narrative – that she is a grief-stricken woman whose senses and testimony are suspect – as being solely the product of a misogynist society.

It's a busy time of year with the holidays I think that's why I'm having a hard time getting into this book. Reality Alteration: After absorbing the power of four Beyonders he displayed the ability to alter reality with a thought. In The Lost Ones, she has crafted an excellent novel, where we see Greyswick, the iconic stately home in this novel, as a character in its own right. They are people in limbo – whose personal circumstances or economic situations have been suddenly re-evaluated and whose future status now seems conditional on a test that they need to pass. Also the story brings out the mentality of small town folks perfectly and flawlessly and i bet readers can easily contemplate with that part.

I wish to thank Harlequin Australia for providing me with a free copy of this book for review purposes. It’s 1917 Stella Marcham has lost her fiancé in the war and is struggling to come to terms with her grief. The historical details were good, and I liked the way Stella's grief and very slow recovery were so difficult for her family to understand, and as was a the case then, and still, trauma and depression were not only dismissed, but not seen, except as irritating for everyone else. I love a ghost story, but I am very picky when it comes to picking up new ones, because I was spoiled at a very young age when I read the work of a wonderful array of authors in the Virago Book of Ghost Stories and two more collections that followed that one. Normally I would have read a few chapters of this trite book and then moved on, but I was reading this while taking brief breaks from packing up a house.The story feels a little stilted in places but I think that is more because the culprit was pretty obvious to me, but then maybe that is just me. Their son eventually plays a key part in the solving of the mystery, I really liked the bits in the old house, it was very much alive for me, something about old houses grips my brain.
