About this deal

Get them to consider why people might make particular choices and consider how they might respond themselves in a similar situation. From the outset, one of the most major concerns the authorities have about the missing machine gun is that, in the wrong hands, its bullets can accidentally kill people some way off by going through walls. Young adult second world war adventure As a child of the late 60's I loved to read everything from Captain Hurricane in the Valliant, the wonderful William by Richard Compton, and the amazing adventures of those intrepid five, the famous five. The Machine Gunners, published in 1975, was the first novel written by English childrens and Young Adult author, Robert Westall. Shame that the Ju 52 was only used as a bomber during the 1939 invasion of Poland and was being exclusively used as a transport plane by 1941.

Explore with the children the power of peer pressure, the impact of charismatic leaders on a population and how difficult it can be for people to challenge the status quo. The rear gunner, Sergeant Rudi Gerlath, manages to parachute out of the plane just before it explodes. The play was directed by Adam Penford [6] and starred Chris Coxon, David Kirkbride, Claire Sundin, Scott Turnbull, Matthew Brown and Michael Imerson. Tomboy: Audrey; described as being a girl who has hockey muscles, skinned knees and is as good at climbing drainpipes and trees as most boys. The machine gunners harks back to an innocent time, set during the second world war and a society light years away from the introduction of the internet and the scourge of social media. Pragmatic Adaptation: A very mild case in the 1983 TV version - Chas uses his actual gasmask, rather than the metal case to beat Boddser Brown. Honor Before Reason: Invoked by the Headmaster of Garmouth Boys Grammar before caning Chas for his method of fighting Boddser. Later a bomb lands on Nicky's house and he is presumed dead but actually survives and hides in the fortress, where he is found by the gang. Chas enjoys leading them through a swamp and various other places an adult policeman is too big or heavy to follow.

The Machine-Gunners also reminds me of this one by by Bernard Ashley, because it is a story about a young boy shouldering the burdens of war.

Mainly because it’s historical fiction set during WW2 and as a big HF reader I thought I would enjoy it. It's actually more than that; a story of friendship and growing up in a fictitious north east English town of Garmouth where the inhabitants attempt to survive under the constant bombing by Nazi fighter pilots. When he finds a machine gun in a fallen German plane he sets on an adventure to turn him and his group of misfit friends into their own Homeguard, building a shelter and ready to shoot down approaching enemy planes as they come in from the bay. It's the middle of the night when three church bells ring; the Germans are raiding Garmouth on foot. A surprise will come their way which will create an interesting dilemma for the secrecy and integrity of their hidden gun emplacement.
