About this deal

Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to talk about periods openly at home, and the practical sections on period products and how to deal with leaks and stains will be invaluable. For instance lots of hospital in London have now stopped offering home births as ambulances are taking too much time to reach houses due to the covid emergency, and this at least in part reflects some of the risks of birthing at home. I found that for a book that was supposed to be positive about all types of birth it was very negative about the kind I am likely to have.

Perhaps due to the fact that I come from a very scientific background, so I understand where most of the health recommendations come from, and that I didn’t agree with the way that the author was criticising the scientific literature. The Positive Birth Book shows how to have the best possible birth (plan), no matter what scenario life holds in place and no matter what voices one is surrounded with. I found the first sections interesting and informative: birth rights, birth plans, the amazing idea of the visual birth plan (which I've now used! Note: I believe that all women have the right to choose how they give birth, and all the decisions should be respected, they shouldn’t feel bad or guilty if they choose an caesarean or if they go for un-medicated birth. She only considers the idea of a c-section as something someone can't choose in the freedom of their own adult mind. Chatty and thorough and uplifting: this book is a whacking great confidence boost right where it’s needed.

A widely acclaimed bestseller since it was first published, it has empowered hundreds of thousands of women worldwide to make informed, positive choices about their births. So if that's something that will turn you off because maybe home births are not an option for you, that will be something to keep in mind.

That said, it’s never too late to attend and to learn more about birth and equip yourself with the tools needed for the best birth possible. With guidance on choosing period products, charting your cycles and preparing a first period kit, alongside profiles of ‘cycle superstars’ such as Amika George who are working to end period poverty, this book is the complete guide to getting your period. So find your flow, bust some myths and start to feel proud of your monthly cycle and your truly amazing body! There is some nuance and it is explained, but the medical viewing point and how doctors think is a little overlooked. Finally, we can put to bed the old saying that, ‘as long as mother and baby are healthy that is all that matters’.Loved this book in preparation of birth and would have given a higher score but got quite frustrated that the author CLEARLY wants you to go for a home birth. A must-have for every girl entering womanhood, and as crucial as any biology textbook for every boy too, My Period is set to help annihilate the stigma, shame and medical negligences linked to our periods, and help everyone understand on a truthful, honest and kind level, the physical, factual happenings of what happens to our female bodies every month, for so many decades of our lives.

Milli Hill set up the Positive Birth Movement in 2012 with a passion to improve the experience of birth for women. One complaint I have with this book is the power struggle Hill claims moms will inevitably face with doctors and hospitals.
