About this deal

Boyd is sufficiently confident in his material to portray historical incidents and characters with casual relish; the battle of Waterloo, for instance, is seen largely from the perspective of a dysentery-beset drummer.

The Real and the Romantic: English Art Between - Waterstones

the joy and intense interest of this book will come courtesy of the attention given by its scholarly but always readable author to less well-known names' - Rachel Cooke, Guardian 'Paul Nash, Gwen John, Henry Moore, Eric Ravilious, Ben Nicholson and Stanley Spencer all feature in this fresh and enlightening new look at English art between 1918 and 1939, which travels from modernism to English pastoral and embraces a host of lesser male and female figures in its broad and highly assured sweep' - Sunday Times 'This amply illustrated volume is a gripping read whether for new collectors looking for tips, art lover or expert' - Rachel Billington, The Tablet 'Figures such as Ravilious, Knights, Dunbar, Nash and Spencer re-interpreted Britain and its landscape for a new world, and this thoughtful and generously illustrated book charts their progress as well as the environment and society they sought to represent' - The Artist 'Spalding brings new insights to familiar names . There’s an apt description of memory as “a fawning courtier to its master the autobiographer” and Boyd’s delight in exploring the unreliability of recollection permeates the narrative. But the Dickensian sojourn in the Marshalsea prison, ice manufacture in Massachussets, and ancient artefact looting in the Ottoman Empire all seem unbridgeably disconnected.Surrender to this fine novel's spell, though, and it will vicariously supply more than enough thrills for anyone. But inexorably, and surprisingly swiftly, it begins to diminish and after a few decades, a half-century, a century, it can amount to virtually nothing.

This is one of my books of the year without a doubt and I’m sorry that I’ve never read any William Boyd before. The events described in the Flashman Papers are what is important; Flashman and the Tiger for example has an appendix and 15 pages of footnotes in smallprint.

Boyd was selected in 1983 as one of the 20 'Best of Young British Novelists' in a promotion run by Granta magazine and the Book Marketing Council.Admittedly it is a fair criticism that you do eventually come to expect the inevitable outcome of his endeavours.

Cashel Greville Ross, the hero of William Boyd’s new novel The Romantic, is a man who does plenty of wandering and whose path through life changes direction many times. When Ross finds himself on the Italian beach where Shelley’s body is being burned, Boyd vividly describes the “curious, putrefying, blue-grey hue” of what remains of the poet’s flesh. It’s frustrating, but it’s also what kept me turning the pages, desperate to see how Cashel would get out of the latest predicament he had found himself in! But what is often lost behind the sheer pleasure brought by his books is their layered Chekhovian subtleties: Boyd is abundantly talented at capturing life’s disconnections, in prose that provides no easy consolations. This marriage between the intimate and the epic continually produces striking vignettes that illuminate the wider narrative. This novel provides an abundance of page-turning literary escapism with rousing plot twists galore, many fueled by his gullibilities. We are consistently invited to question how far Ross’s exploits are “true” and how far they are self-perpetuated creation. This is a perfectly enagaging read, it just isn't as enjoyable a journey as Any Human Heart, or The New Confessions for that matter. and her plans for the future, before I ask Eliza how she’s found everything since releasing her album.
