About this deal

In later life Hawker designed a "military musket" and commissioned the manufacture of several prototypes at his own expense. His shooting and other adventures were extensively recorded in diary form, starting in 1802 and continuing until just before his death in 1853. What his diary details is the 'gentleman's pursuits' in game shooting and fishing, with numbers bagged and techniques used, but also the social obligations of a man of his class and the fact that if he did go out punt-gunning in the worst weather, he would suffer from a chill for the next few days, but then, he could always afford the doctor! These are reproduced now exactly as the original edition, with the addition of a new Foreword by Colin Laurie McKelvie.

Hawker published his “Advice to Young Sportsmen” in 1814, a popular work having nine imprints in his lifetime with the latest paper edition printed in 1975.Instructions to young sportsmen in all that relates to guns and shooting, Colonel Peter Hawker, 1910.

It`s taken a mate of mine some twenty five years of badgering to get a look at some of the UK located copies of the original documents.Payne Gallwey obviously had them but I believe others were burned by the Hawker family and Gallwey only used a fraction of what he had available .

Therefore, you will see the original copyright references, library stamps (as most of these works have been housed in our most important libraries around the world), and other notations in the work. However, in certain instances, occasional blurriness, missing segments, or faint black spots might persist. So the punt gun shown in an earlier TGS Outdoors video was either Hawkers, or there`s a 50% chance it was his.You will have a shotgun aboard to act as a ‘cripple killer’ and will use it to shoot wounded birds as you collect the fallen floating on the water.

Fieldsports Press Limited, Epsilon House, Enterprise Road, Southampton Science Park, Southampton, SO16 7NS, United Kingdom. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature. to regard them as quarry seems an outmoded idea, belonging more properly to the era of Peter Hawker and his contemporaries of 150 years ago who's principle of "If it moves, shoot it" has happily long died out. Hawker notes in his diary that: "I was a Captain of Dragoons soon after I was seventeen years old, but paid dearer for it than anyone in the service. Regular encounters on the marshes with other shooters, including what were described variously as 'swarms of gunners' and 'gangs of shore shooters', illustrate just how much pressure the wildlife faced.Of course visits to 'The Mill' are a bit tricky at the moment but when things get back to normal I would be happy to help arrange a visit so you can take some pictures of the gun if you want? However, the difference in ignition time meant that the second charge was released momentarily behind the first, scything through the birds rising in response to the first shot and significantly increasing the bag. Perhaps predictably, wealthy gentlemen of a sporting persuasion began to find the idea of the punt-gun attractive and became involved.
