If you really want to get an impression of HDR’s strengths without having to spend big on a much higher end TV, the 50UK3163DB won’t let you down. The build quality is relatively simple, if clearly cheap – the casing is a black plastic that hugs the screen with a thick bezel.With a Blu-ray of The Matrix playing, motion is better resolved suggesting the Toshiba’s motion isn’t as slick with streaming. In fact, the 50UK3163DB HDR image management provides it with so much brightness/light control headroom that it’s able to still make peak highlights of full-screen bright images stand proud of their already punchy surroundings, rather than the brightness just ‘flattening off’ as we might expect with a TV that has less than 500 nits to play with.
That’s further affected by the UK31’s lack of luminance – 343 nits is the most it can muster in its Natural picture mode. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and refers to contrast (or difference) between the brightest and darkest parts of an image.You’ll have to flick the switch at the mains just to shut down the AI assistant and stop it listening for a ‘power on’ command.
That said, I was disappointed to see Disney Plus, Apple TV and NOW were absent, and there’s no support for Spotify or Apple Music. Guess you've yet to view a 37" to 42" 1080p LCD from a distance of between 4 to 6 feet - the higher resolution benefits of 1080p are easily noticeable [over and above a comparison to the same distance with a 720p display]. This acts as a customisable screensaver feature when the TV is in standby mode, displaying information such as the time, weather and calendar events. The night-time scenes are packed with deep, moody blacks, while daytime scenes take advantage of vibrant yellows, oranges and greens.
If wall-mounting is not a consideration (or feasible) there’s the stand to deal, which while easy to screw in, is surprisingly heavy and brings the TV’s profile down low. Hands down best budget panel I've ever seen at about half the cost of an XBR4 with PQ close to matching it IMO. Yet without the motion processing in play, judder with 24p film sources can – especially during slow camera pans – look a little exaggerated.
The construction of the chassis is noticeably plastic, and just as noticeable is the chunky bezel that stripes the screen.
Google Analytics (when enabled in Guide Settings) allows subscribers to gain insights into the use of their help center. With the SKY box powered on, select the Menu on your Toshiba remote, select Installation from the on screen menu and then select Analogue Tuning. To make matters worse, turn the volume anywhere above 50% and you’ll be met with some bad distortion.
