Interpret and accept the political content as you will, Berger stays true to the war film remit of presenting the battles as horrific spectacles. It received a leading 14 nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards (winning seven, including Best Film) and nine at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won four: Best International Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design. The film from director Edward Berger is based on the world-renowned bestseller of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. Winner of 7 BAFTAs, including in the categories of "Best Film", "Best Director", "Best Film Not in the English Language" and "Best Adapted Screenplay".How or why they thought this would be a glamorous life I don’t know but as learning curves go, this is unquestionably a steep one to begin with. They are deployed to La Malmaison in Northern France where they are befriended by Stanislaus “Kat” Katczinsky (Albrecht Schuch). It's also getting a 4K release, but this was my favorite Netflix film from 2022 alongside Pinocchio.

Usual non-battle exploits ensue, such as Kat stealing a goose from a French farmer (which has repercussions later) and Paul managing to charm his way into the boudoir of local girl.Producer Malte Grunert said the film tells the "story of a young man who falls prey to right-wing nationalist propaganda – believing that war is an adventure, and that they are on the right side. Location Managers Guild International Awards Winners: 'John Wick 4,' 'All Quiet on the Western Front,' '1923,' 'The Last of Us,' 'The White Lotus' ". Directed by Edward Berger, it stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic, and Devid Striesow. The first sign comes when Paul notices a nametag in it, blissfully unaware he is almost literally stepping into a dead man’s shoes.

Unfortunately Netflix will default to the English dub if there is one even though, in this case, it says right in the description that the movie is in German. four German students – Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), Albert Kropp (Aaron Hilmer), Franz Müller (Moritz Klaus), and Ludwig Behm (Adrian Grünewald) – enlist in the Imperial German Army after a rousing patriotic speech given at their school. Edward Berger directs this film adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, a 1929 novel of the same title by Erich Maria Remarque. By the end, Germany's delegation to Rethondes appears indignant as the terms and conditions of armistice are quoted by Mathias Erzberger, namely forfeiting submarines, planes, weapons and so on; what is read there was not in the November 11, 1918 capitulation act but was imposed upon Germany next year in the Treaty of Versailles. They soon discover that war is less about noble ideas and sacrifice than it is about pain, humiliation, suffering and death.

A year later, under the now accepted English title All Quiet On The Western Front, the first film adaptation appeared, becoming the first film to win Oscars for both Best Picture and Best Director. It's unfortunate that I feel the need to vent about All Quiet on the Western Front because in many respects it's a very well made film that is maybe a bit derivative in some aspects (the score is quite striking but reminds me a lot of the late Jóhann Jóhannson) but nevertheless succesfully updates the WW1 battlefield to modern sensibilities without sacrificing the horror, from the pre-title sequence to the recruitment and the first battle I thought it was excellent stuff. Even the battle scenes are jokes - soldiers running forward to occupy enemy trenches against all odds, without support, and for no obvious reason.

To those unfamiliar with the source material, it’s unclear if Paul's arc is a descent into an outright villain or if still holds onto his pre-war self. In those, Paul had gone home for a brief visit, and all he wanted was go back to the trenches, because he could no longer relate to anything else. He also praised the addition of a parallel plot tracking the armistice, even if it diverged from the first person narrative of the novel. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. All Quiet on the Western Front” tells the gripping story of a young German soldier on the Western Front of World War I. Over the course of years on the front, he watched his friends die one-by-one, as his mind was gradually broken down to the point that he lost his will to live. Visuals and sound are outstanding and while they don't really stick to the novel the capture the essence of the book.
