About this deal

In every one of her novels James has spared nothing in attending to details. She describes her characters from their eye color to the definition of a cheekbone, illuminating them with her psychological insights and sharing with the reader their elemental personalities. All of this makes them real to readers who are then able to care about them and eager to discover their fate. This gift helps rivet fans to her books and has made her a provocative writer whose approach to mystery writing may be classical in some ways but in others is purely of her own devising. In an interview she said, "I ... discovered that within the detective form I could write a novel that has a moral ambiguity and psychological subtlety like a serious novel. Writing within the constraints isn't in fact inhibiting; it's positively liberating! Many of my books are --- well, they're to do with death --- but they're also to do with love, different aspects of human love." James writes of the whydunit rather than the whodunit and her grasp and appreciation for the boundless perplexities of human behavior deeply enriches her books.” — Philadelphia Inquirer Elegantly constructed, beautifully written . . . [ The Murder Room] is cause for rejoicing. . . . [It] is that much-sought-after but rare combination of reading that both transports the reader to another world and engages the imagination.” — St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Detective Sergeant Martin is Dalgliesh's partner in Cover Her Face and A Mind to Murder. In Shroud for a Nightingale he partners with Detective Sergeant Masterson. Dalgliesh's first permanent partner was the moody and arrogant Detective Chief Inspector Massingham. Detective Inspector Kate Miskin serves with Dalgliesh and Massingham in Scotland Yard's Special Investigation Squad. In The Lighthouse, Miskin takes over running the investigation when Dalgliesh contracts SARS. She is still a member of Dalgliesh's team at the conclusion of The Private Patient (2008). James, P. D. Jane Dalgliesh is Adam Dalgiesh's aunt and his sole living relative until her death prior to Devices and Desires. Introduced in Unnatural Causes, she is described as a very private and cerebral person, not unlike Dalgliesh himself. She is fond of bird watching and possesses a cottage in Suffolk which she later sells and buys a converted windmill in Norfolk, which Dalgliesh inherits upon her death. The “murder room” of the title is a gallery of a private museum specializing in interwar Britain. This exhibition area of the Dupayne Museum includes artifacts related to famous homicides of the era. Soon after police commander Adam Dalgliesh and a friend visit the museum, one of the museum’s trustees is found dead. Neville Dupayne has been burned up in his car in the museum’s garage. He and his siblings, Caroline and Marcus, were appointed trustees by the founder, their late father. Part of the mystery revolves around the upcoming decision to close the museum, which is in financial straits. Neville alone favored closing it. Was he killed for this reason?

More from The Author

The Murder Room introduces several unhappy families—the Dupayne siblings, Tally Clutton and her daughter, Muriel Godby’s family, Neville Dupayne and his daughter, among others. To what extent do these families represent the ills of contemporary society? Or are they simply examples of unsentimental realism? The privately owned Dupayne Museum, dedicated to the history of England between the world wars, is going to close unless all three trustees agree to keep it in business. When the sole dissenting trustee, psychiatrist Neville Dupayne, is found burned alive in his Jaguar in the museum’s garage, the question of the museum’s future is rather gruesomely put to rest, and a new case opens for Commander Adam Dalgliesh. The murder is uncannily similar to one described in the museum’s popular Murder Room, which preserves objects related to some of the era’s most lurid crimes. Dalgliesh and his team are burdened with a wealth of possible suspects: nearly everyone involved in the museum had reasons to want to keep the museum open—and therefore to wish Neville Dupayne out of the way. Even his daughter, who wants to take a long vacation from her failing career, is a suspect. Two more murders follow, each carefully copying elements of cases from the Murder Room. Meanwhile, Dalgliesh is unusually keen on solving this case, as it is keeping him from spending time with Emma Lavenham, his first real love interest in years. As the son of a parson and a man who spent many happy summers along the East Anglian coast, Dalgliesh is the perfect detective to call upon when a young boy is found buried in the sand near a small theological college. His influential father demands justice, and the pursuit of it will lead Dalgliesh deep into the religious community. The Murder Room is a 2003 detective novel and the 12th in the Adam Dalgliesh series by P. D. James. It takes place in London, particularly the Dupayne Museum on the edge of Hampstead Heath in the London Borough of Camden.

The Murder Room was adapted for BBC television in 2004, starring Martin Shaw, Janie Dee and Samantha Bond. Book details Elegant . . . smooth storytelling. . . . The body is Neville, identified only by a bag in the car's boot. A search of his apartment reveals only one significant personal item, a note from a lover in his bedside drawer. When Adam interviews his secretary, Andrea Fox ( Robinah Kirondé), she admits that she loves him, although she’s married to someone else. Neville didn’t love her; they just met for occasional sex. She also claims Neville’s reason for the meeting was to try to close the museum. Adam asks Caroline about the lease, and she shrugs it off, saying she figured it would be like every time, where she and Marcus would argue Neville out of it later, and he’d sign. a camera operator / b camera operator: dailies / steadicam operator / steadicam operator: dailies (3 episodes, 2021) His father was the rector of a Norfolk country parish.
