However, for Childes the situation is worsening by the day. The visions are becoming more vivid, the crimes they portray of such utter malice and cruelty. Childes cannot accept that whoever is doing these things is in any way human. Such hideous acts of utter brutality are the mark of something inhuman. And he can feel the malignant insanity of the perpetrator seeping into him more and more with the arrival of each vision. If that's the point, then okay. It makes sense but that just means we now have an unlikable main character surrounded on an island with other unlikeable characters. He was one of our greatest popular novelists, whose books are sold in thirty-three other languages, including Russian and Chinese. Widely imitated and hugely influential, his 19 novels have sold more than 42 million copies worldwide. This book is nothing like James Herbets normal style. This book is absolutely wonderful! In this tale we meet fluke! Fluke is a tiny puppy fresh into the world, but he's not like an ordinary puppy he's different. We then follow Fluke on his vast adventures and find out just what fluke is and why he was a puppy, and along the way we meet some really amazing characters as well as some really nutty ones too. Now, almost three years since his relocation, and thirty-four-year-old Childes was finally feeling reasonably secure in his new life. After giving up a very prosperous career, Childes was now working as a freelance IT teacher for the handful of private schools located on the island. And it’s at the La Roche all-girls school where he had met with twenty-three-year-old French teacher Aimee Sebire, of whom he had slowly begun to build up a close relationship. A relationship that had taken a while to come to fruition solely because of Childes’ ingrained commitment issues.

It's not as bad as I'm writing it to be, as I said. It's okay... Well, kinda. I'd be lying if I said that the ending isnt a mess. In fact the entire final third of this book just really lost me. I don't know if the publisher had a word count in mind or not but the ending chapters feel like an eternity. The pacing entirely goes off a cliff. For those who have read the book, I'm mainly talking about "The Fire". From "The Fire" until the end felt incredibly dull and drawn out. I just wanted it to end. Sadly, it did then end and I was left relieved that I could put the book down but also pretty disappointed at how the ideas here were left squandered. Fluke.. I honestly wasn't sure if I wanted to read this mostly because I wasn't sure what to expect? I've read The fog and The rats and was expecting something horrific. Animal abuse is something I can't read about at all! as I own a dog, and he's my little man and my best friend. But I bit the bullet and I'm so glad I did. It's set on the island of Guernsey, which is why I read it, and that aspect was the only plus for me. It's a superb piece of observation, a moving tale of character and, paradoxically, humanity in the animal kingdom. Excellent writing, too:

I first read this as a young teenager, but I only had the vaguest of recollections of it so it was love to revisit. Linking the film to childhood memories he had of rats in London's East End. I should make a mention of the 1995 film version which moves the action to the US. It seems to follow the narrative of the book somewhat, but turns the whole story into a family-friendly film. Gone is the sinister machinations of the Guvnor and his ilk. I haven’t finished watching it- just discovered it on Netflix- but it’s a different creature than the novel. However, with the barrage of unwanted publicity that followed, Childes found that he could no longer continue with his marriage, even for the sake of their young daughter Gabriel, and eventually fled to the Channel Islands to start up a new life for himself. Well, technically, she has a little squeal in the store. She gets a little bit too excited. She searches for some more books so that she can get the offer. She holds the book close to her chest. Then, she buys it with a wide smile on her face.
