Lauryn Hill compared the album to The Who’s ‘Tommy,’ saying that “It's almost like a hip-hop version…like what The Who did for rock music. On the vinyl release, the CD crossfades between A5/B1 and B3/C1 are eliminated: A5 and B3 fade out regularly; B1 begins with Chinese restaurant skit at end of "The Beast"; C1 begins with the dialogue at the end of "Killing Me Softly"; D1 begins with the dialogue at the end of "Cowboys".

The album features a wide range of samples and instrumentation, with many aspects of alternative hip hop that would come to dominate the hip hop music scene in the mid-late 1990s. The instrumentation is as it should be for rock fans, a fairly obvious Bob Marley cover for stoners and college kids, and enough soulful vocals from figurehead Lauryn Hill to middle-aged listeners still on the fence about hip-hop. Coincidentally, Hill would meet and subsequently start dating Marley’s son, Rohan a few months after the release of this album.

First single, ‘Fu-Gee-La’ is based on Teena Marie’s ‘Ooo La La La’ and ‘(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right’ by Ramsey Lewis, the two songs reinterpreted and inconspicuously and masterfully brought together.
