About this deal

We are confident we have a speaker model to match every taste, requirement and budget, and we are here to offer advice on what speakers are right for you and your hi-fi system. So we know what’s coming next then, eh? Top class engineering, perhaps? To make its Klarity drivers, Wharfedale adds mica to increase stiffness. Apparently, this helps to reduce flexing. The downside is that now I want to upgrade the rest of the home theatre speakers! I love the way the Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 sound and they are plenty good for the use I make of them (playing music in the living room and now watching movies; not too loud because I have neighbours upstairs) so I'd like to keep them and get speakers that fit with them.

And last, they are relatively inefficient and current hogs. 4 ohm stable amps are preferred partners although many mid-priced AV receivers that cross over bass duties to a subwoofer should satisfy the home-theater crowd. But step up the amplifier chain and these Diamonds will reward the investment with heightened levels of realism, greater mid-range depth and stronger low-end impact. The discerning audiophile will also note the diamond pattern moulded into the surround of the woven Kevlar cone. This is more than just cosmetic as the pattern reduces and damps standing waves in the surround yeilding a cleaner high frequency acoustic roll-off. While you can't argue with the level of control and transparency on offer, it has to be said that the 10.1s don't quite match the leading rivals for excitement. As for the Diamond 12 Series’ treble unit? It has a 25mm dome made from a woven polyester film with a high gloss coating. The front plate is flat and exposes the dome as much as possible.Wharfedale USA's Walter Schofield told me that one of the keys to the 10.1's design is the company's vertically integrated manufacturing facility [in China]. Middle vendors are eliminated—each component of the speaker is made from raw materials in-house. The intended result is a cohesive, organic sound quality and performance, and an appearance well above the speaker's price point. The Diamond 10.1 is the first Wharfedale speaker to be voiced by European speaker designer and one-time reviewer Peter Comeau. So who is it then? Well, if you’re a fan of Q Acoustic designs or you have heard designs like the 3020i and 3030i and liked those then you will also be expressing admiration for the designer, German-based Karl Heinz Fink. Karl was effectively the launch designer for the Q Acoustic brand but left Q Acoustic around two years ago, give or take. Karl, who also runs his own high-end design company called Fink Team for his own branded speakers, has been working with Wharfedale of late and is the brains behind the Diamond 12 series. Low Profile Chassis: The open nature of the chassis reduces reflection from rear cone movements, allowing air to move freely through the driver, which in turn results to an overall even response with a much lower distortion. Formed from a high density, injection-moulded polymer pioneered by Wharfedale, the chassis itself provides substantial damping of ring waves.

What they give you is top-table performance but they basically sit on a different facet on the same diamond (no pun intended), giving you something different and unique in terms of sonic style and choice. And I love the fact that choice is out there, ready to be selected.

I asked a similar question in the UK (AVForums.com) version of this forum. Having know of Wharfedale for many years, I wondered why they did not get recommended more often. On the whole, the 10.1s are versatile enough to do justice to a wide variety of music, and they're relatively unfussy about positioning, too.
