About this deal

I regularly use Macpherson’s Acrylic Matt because it’s ridiculously durable. Yes, it dries with a soft sheen but it’s a good trade off in my opinion. It covers in most colours in 2 coats which is a bonus. Leyland Hard-wearing Matt (Joe Sexton)

Not only are they affordable and scrubbable, I find them a pleasure to use, the consistency is great, and Crown include really helpful information on the tins such as what to use as a mist-coat on fresh plaster, what tips and pressure to use if you’re spraying… I really, really have to struggle to find something I dislike about this range of products. It is probably the best durable emulsion range on the UK market. Tikkurila Optiva 3 (8% of the vote) Best Washable and Scrubbable Matt Paints 1. Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt Beyond the practicality of the paint, the Optiva 3 has a variety of stunning colours, especially with the current interior decor trends in 2021 (think dark blues and greens). Furthermore, the Optiva 3 has a dead flat finish (compared to the Optiva 5 which has a slight sheen to it) which is definitely “in” at the moment. Crown Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt is suitable for use on a variety of surfaces, including plaster, wood, and primed metal. Is Crown Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt safe for use in kitchens and bathrooms? It’s very possible that respondents to our poll hadn’t used the latest iteration of the Optiva 5 so it’s tough to say if the Optiva 5 deserves its place on this list. We asked AS Decorating for some more specifics on whether they’ve noticed a change. Here’s what they had to say:

2.5 Litre Magnolia

Taking 3rd place as voted for by 15% of the professional painters and decorators we surveyed is Dulux’s consistently reliable Diamond Matt. This isn’t all too surprising to us. Dulux’s Diamond matt has a good reputation among tradesmen as a reliable, durable and stain-resistant emulsion. It’s also an incredibly versatile paint. It is suitable for use anywhere around the home and due to its remarkable durability, it can withstand many washes as well as withstand the environmental demands of kitchens and bathrooms. Crown Clean Extreme is a durable emulsion which is available in white, or any colour from Crown’s vast colour range. It is suitable for kitchens, most bathrooms and areas with high traffic. It is perfect for households with small children or pets.

In the past, Crown Stain Resistant Clean Extreme Matt has been poor opacity with white. However, Crown identified the problem and improved the formula to compensate. This covered a base white in two coats of Clean Extreme, which is impressive for a durable matt. The paint flowed well and didn’t pull, but I always cut it in and go around with a 4 inch paint roller. Taking the 4th and 5th spots are Tikkurila 5 and Tikkurila 3 with the professionals seemingly at loggerheads as to which one is the best washable matt paint. I’m sure that most professional decorators will have heard of Crown Trade Clean Extreme, and I would guess that many have tried (or maybe even use on a regular basis) the stain resistant scrubbable matt product. But Clean Extreme is actually a range of six quality problem-solution products designed to keep walls and ceilings looking better, for longer.

So why do professional painters opt for a trade paint like Crown Clean Extreme over ‘washable’ retail paints? Well, you will reduce overall maintenance costs in labour and material due to the longevity and prolonged aesthetics of the paint over a longer period. So whilst the initial cost of a paint like Crown Clean Extreme might seem high, overall it will provide you with more value over the long run. Drying Time: Under normal drying conditions, touch dry in 1-2 hours and re-coatable after 4 hours. Allow for adequate ventilation during the drying period. Crown Trade Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Matt is perfect for high traffic areas such as hallways and corridors, where you need a paint that can be repeatedly cleaned without losing its ‘just painted’ appeal. That’s why Crown has developed its Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt – a true flat matt that stays matt even after rigorous cleaning. In fact, it has an impressive durability level of 10,000 scrubs and has been independently tested to ISO 11998 Class 1 scrub rating for guaranteed results. As with all durable matt emulsion products, having the correct brush and roller for the job will make all the different. You need a medium pile roller for Crown Clean Extreme, as it will deposit the paint smoothly. A soft emulsion brush is also preferable, simply because this paint flows well and you’ll cut a better line with a soft brush.

Crown Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt is formulated to have low VOC content, resulting in minimal odor during and after application. Can I use this paint on various surfaces? In terms of application, it goes on very nicely and has decent enough coverage so a drop of paint goes a long way. It is a pricey product and unless you were going to be painting large areas, you might be better off giving this a miss as smaller quantities are simply too expensive. So, this product has all the great benefits of Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt, PLUS it gives defence against bacteria such as E-Coli and MRSA, thanks to Crown’s SteriTouch technology. This has something to do with Silver Ions, and I was seriously the worst kid in the class at chemistry at school, so please don’t ask me to explain how it works. But if you’re working in a hospital and need a scrubbable matt finish, this is the paint for you! Crown Trade vinyl matt represents great value for money, which echoes Crown Trade as a whole. You will get a good finish with this paint and the price is very attractive. However, you will need to be careful not to let it drag on application, and your finished walls can scuff easily. You wouldn’t use Crown Trade vinyl matt in rooms with high traffic, or in homes with pets and small children. The new baller in town is the Leyland hard-wearing matt. I’ve been using it for the past few weeks and it’s excellent. Excellent finish and is an even better white than Tikkurila. I really can’t tell the difference between this gear and Johnstone’s matt apart from the price. What’s the Difference Between the Best Washable Matt Paint and Regular Matt? If I had to find one thing I didn’t like, the opacity in white isn’t the best, but even there Crown have reformulated to improve this recently. But I don’t want to end on a negative when there’s so much that I love about this paint. IT’S GREAT GEAR! Yes, I’ve noticed a big difference in it. It used to be brilliant and my go to paint. Now looking at changing again as there’s flashing happening above door facings, had it picture frame (even doing 1 wall at a time) and now showing up the slightest imperfections in walls.
