As well as an image capture device, the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo can also act as a standalone mini printer, connectable to our smartphones via Bluetooth, meaning that photos transmitted from our phone’s camera roll can be output as hard copies. It also means that shots can be transferred the other way from the Mini Evo to our smartphone for sharing on social media or with friends and family. Truly its maker seems to be attempting to cover all bases and user requests with this one. If there was ever an Instax Mini camera deserving of being called "pro," the Instax Mini Evo is it. The Instax Mini Evo is a beautiful homage to film cameras and one that nobody would be embarrassed to pull out at any event. Instax film is incredibly simple to use - all you need to do is line up the small yellow line on the Instax film with the same yellow line on the camera and close the door when it’s in place. Be careful not to accidentally open the film door once you start using the film though, as you’ll risk exposing and ruining the film. Using the camera is pretty much entirely automatic thanks to the Program AE mode. The Instax Mini Evo automatically optimizes the shutter speed (1/4 second to 1/8000 second), flash output, ISO speed (100 to 1600) and other key settings according to the current shooting conditions. One important limitation to be aware of is that the Mini Evo only saves images that you've actually printed into the app, not every photo that you've taken - so if you've filled up the built-in memory with 45 images, but only printed 10 of them, only those 10 will be saved in the app.

Instax Mini Evo in the Hand

The camera is of course made entirely from plastic, so ideally you won't ever drop it (!), but it is robust enough to survive a small drop if you do. Also at the bottom of the Fuji Instax Mini Evo, alongside the card slot, is a micro USB port, which you can use to charge up the camera. The flash on the front of the camera will light up to let you know it’s charging, switching off when it’s complete. There's also a factory-reset button in the same compartment..

Instantly print the images you take or send them over to your smartphone for sharing on social media. The choice is up to you. That said, in activating the camera for the first time via the commendably tactile on/off lever on the faceplate, we’re met with an almost overwhelming array of on-screen options, which meant that it took us a couple of minutes to work out how we could cut through all that and simply capture and output a photo. It should, after all, be as simple as pointing and shooting, as on competing purely analogue models from Fuji and others. It’s best to view the digital versions of the photos as just a guide to let you know what you should bother to print. They don’t stand up on their own when viewed on a computer screen, and certainly aren’t ones you’re likely to want to keep or use for any other purpose than for printing in the small Instax size.

Ease of Use

The rear display is a weak point. The 3-inch screen isn't super sharp, at just 460k dots in resolution, but this isn't a high-res camera. Viewing angles and screen brightness are a bigger problem. You basically have to look at the screen dead-on or it appears totally washed out. In bright light, it's tough to cut through the glare, even when viewing it directly. The Evo is frustrating to use outdoors, especially on a bright winter day. The built-in battery is good for up to 100 shots, and around 20 photo prints. It's charged via the microUSB port hidden on the bottom of the camera, which is where you'll also find a microSD card slot. The Mini Evo's built-in memory can hold up to 45 images before you'll need to add external storage. Performance As for the prints themselves, they’re nicely saturated and give a good impression of detail thanks to their small size. They’re fun enough for souvenirs and keepsakes, particularly if you use the camera at a special event such as a party, special trip or a wedding and so on. The good news is that you can use the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo as a printer, as well as a camera. That means that in theory you could completely ignore the camera aspect and use the device to print much better photos from your smartphone, or even dedicated camera. Sample Images

You get a little bit of internal memory (enough to store about 45 photos), but you need to add a microSD or microSDHC memory card to save additional ones—about 850 images per gigabyte. Memory cards are inexpensive enough, but a more useful amount of internal memory would have been nice. Instax Mini Evo in the HandImage quality isn't anything to write home about—the Mini Evo's 1/5-inch CMOS sensor matches up with budget smartphones, not flagships. It snaps 5MP photos, good enough for Mini prints and social shares, but not much else. Recent Samsung Galaxy phones and iPhones offer much more capable camera experiences. But the filters and color profiles are a boon for creators, and wireless connectivity allows you to print photos from your phone's camera roll. Also on the top plate we find a large ridged metal dial set flush to the body which is unmarked, but which a glance at the booklet in the box reveals is a ‘film dial’ for selecting the 10 different film effects promised up front. It then makes sense that turning the ridged lens dial surrounding the lens itself runs through the 10 different lens settings. The Mini Evo isn't just a camera, it's also an Instax film printer—it features Bluetooth 4.2+LE connectivity for easy connections to smartphones. I tried the Instax Mini Evo companion app with an iPhone. The remote control interface sizes down the live feed from the camera A shutter release button is also found on the front of the Instax Mini Evo, which feels slightly strange in use for those who are used to finding buttons in the more traditional place. The instax mini Evo uses a 28mm f2 lens, this gives you a wide-angle that gets everyone in the shot. Snap subjects as close as 10cm all the way to infinity.

You can still get a sense of the frame in bright, glare-inducing conditions, but it's tough to really see what's happening. As such, you need to trust the Evo to focus on the right subject. In practice, I found that it does a very good job—it only misfocused a couple of times. The mirror filter splits the frame in half with a mirrored reflection effect—it's a good tool to get creative shots with perfect symmetry Pressing the up and down keys activates the digital zoom, while the left and right keys toggle between exposure compensation, self-timer, flash, macro (the closest focus distance is 10cm when set to the macro mode) and white balance settings. I am not being hyperbolic when I say Fujifilm’s Instax Mini Evo is the greatest instant camera ever made.Submit a valuation request and we'll provide guide prices with no delay. FUJIFILM Corporation (President and CEO, Representative Director Teiichi Goto) has launched the new instax mini Evo Hybrid instant camera (mini Evo), available on 1st February 2022. With a sophisticated and classic look that is synonymous with Fujifilm’s iconic approach to camera design, the mini Evo’s unique hybrid format combines the excitement and enjoyment of analog instant camera functionality with the capabilities of digital photo technology to store, share, and print images. There’s a cute animation of the photo rolling off the screen and “into” your print as it comes out of the film slot on top. Raymond Wong / Input Once an image has been printed out, you’ll need to allow some time for the Instax film to develop - in other words, don’t be alarmed when it pops out completely white. After a few minutes, the colours should have fully rendered. Lens modes: Normal, Vignette, Soft Focus, Blur, Fisheye, Colour Shift, Light Leak, Mirror, Double Exposure, Half-frame
