About this deal

There are far more fun things to be doing than brushing your teeth, but it’s very important all the tooth surfaces in the mouth get cleaned evenly.

There’s a big difference in how long rechargeable batteries last. In our tests we found the best lasted for more than 184 minutes – that’s about six and a half weeks of brushing twice a day for two minutes before you’d need to top up the power. Should the worst happen and it fails inside or outside of warranty, in most instances it will be possible to get it repaired without significant financial impact. Pressure sensors: If you have a habit of brushing your teeth a little too hard, it's smart to find an electric toothbrush with pressure sensors. Froum says, "One of the more important features for an electric brush is a Using gentle micro-vibrations and AI technology to guide you through your brushing routine, our testers said it delivered a really clean feeling. It boasts a range of settings and will even remember the last one you used, so you don’t have to fiddle around to find your favourite. But others won’t last as long – we found the least powerful brush needed recharging after just 16 brushes.

3. Upgrade to a more quiet sonic toothbrush

If you’re new to electric brushes it will feel like it is giving a very thorough clean. The timer and pacer help you brush for the right amount of time Brushing modes and heads – varied modes and heads can give you a tailored brushing experience. From those designed for whitening or sensitive teeth, to those aimed at people wearing braces, high-end brushes often come with a choice. The GHI recruited a panel of 317 testers to trial 30 electric toothbrushes for a fortnight. They were asked to judge each model on its ease of use, design, features, battery life and overall performance. We asked them to use a disclosing tablet before and after brushing their teeth to determine how effective their toothbrush was at removing plaque. Simply switching to an electric toothbrush cannot guarantee healthy teeth, of course. A good toothpaste, brushing technique, brushing at the right time and flossing are all crucial too. But an electric toothbrush is certainly a good start. Pro Series: Oral-B’s affordable, mainstream brushes. These bring in the 3D action, with micro vibrations, oscillation and rotation for a better clean, along with pressure alerts and a lithium-ion battery (on most models). Oral Care Wellness All Oral Care Electric Toothbrushes Toothpastes Whiteners Floss Mouthwashes Water Flossers Scrubbing and pressure sensors: To get an effective clean, you only need to place the brush against your gum line—you shouldn't apply any pressure to the brush and you don't need to scrub your teeth. Electric toothbrushes with pressure sensors will monitor how much pressure you apply and alert you to ease up. The ones with scrubbing sensors will do the same if they notice you're scrubbing your teeth too much. This will help protect your enamel and gums. Don't worry, your teeth and gums will get perfectly clean without any of that pressure.

Does it deliver as good a clean as the more expensive Sonicare models? Maybe not. Even when you move beyond its Soft and Gum Care modes for the White and Polish options, you don’t quite get the power of a mid-range Philips brush, not to mention alternatives from Oclean or Ordo. However, your teeth feel clean after brushing and the Gum Care mode gives your gums a decent massage, while the Soft mode is ideal for first-time electric toothbrush users or those with sensitive gums. Otherwise, it’s worth looking out for pressure sensors that can warn you when you’re pressing too hard while brushing – or not hard enough. Plus, a brushing timer that sends a pulse through the brush when it’s time to stop brushing (usually two minutes), or time to move to another quadrant of your mouth (roughly every 30 seconds). Seven cleaning modes (daily clean, sensitive, gum care, intense clean, whitening, super sensitive and tongue clean)

Recycling schemes are being introduced by other brands, with some accepting more waste streams, such as floss and interdental brushes. At the time of review, they are not as effortless as SURI. Post-brushing, our teeth felt exceptionally clean, akin to a dental visit. Given the brand's reputation and the toothbrush's settings and intensities, this toothbrush is a great fit for those looking for a thorough and effective clean. Made from aluminum with an inner steel core, it’s not a perfect cylinder. Wider than it is deep, there is some curvature but squared sides give a more industrial appearance and makes it feel solid and secure in hand. Residual toothpaste builds up most on the brush head and upon the metal plate at the attachment point. This is easily rectified as the water resistant (IPX7) handle can be rinsed under the tap, or used in the shower if that’s your preference. One handy feature which we hadn’t seen in the iO4 is the brush head replacement reminder. An orange LED light at the bottom of the control panel will flash when the brush head needs to be changed. The top of the handle also has a pressure sensor, flashing green or red according to how hard you’re pressing.

The best electric toothbrushes you can buy in 2023

What do you need the toothbrush to do? Maybe you just need one mode for cleaning a little deeper than you can with a manual toothbrush. I try to eliminate exterior factors and keep things consistent. But please note this is to be used as a guide only. Other factors affecting the noise Brush head Patients who use electric toothbrushes are a lot less likely to suffer from gum disease”, says Dr Edwards-Lunn. “Unfortunately, gum disease is a multifactoral disease. Just having an electric toothbrush doesn’t mean you won’t get it. But it will mean the risk is much reduced. The most important thing is removing the plaque.” Will electric toothbrushes help with receding gums? Rotating, sonic, pulsating, oscillating, counter-rotating… there are all sorts of electric toothbrushes available and they all work in slightly different ways. The Waterpik Complete Care 9.0 stands out as a perfect choice for those looking for an efficient and easy-to-use water flosser, ensuring a thorough and refreshing clean for your oral hygiene routine. The water flosser was a pleasant surprise, making flossing easier to remember and removing food particles effectively.

Soft items like towels, dampen the sound. There is less reverberation of the sound waves and less echo. Where some companies don’t offer repair outside of the warranty or deem it economically unviable, SURI’s approach is to minimize the impact on global resources. Whilst the corn starch PLA used for the head is still plastic, it is industrially compostable. The castor oil used for the bristles is a bio-based plastic. It is made from a renewable rather than a finite resource and is subsequently better for the planet.

Sonic and ultrasonic – These are brushes that vibrate at certain high speeds and frequencies to help break down plaque. Manufacturers of sonic brushes claim that they also drive cleaning fluid (a mixture of toothpaste, water and saliva) between teeth to help dislodge plaque. Vibrating brushes are generally more expensive than rotating models. It is not possible to test every toothbrush that exists on the market today. So, yes, theoretically there may well be a quieter or louder brush available that might not be on the list. As a general rule, I am including products that are more widely sold and available to the vast majority of people. How I measure the sound? I want to love it, but I’m not sure I do, as the head is quite wide which makes it hard to reach all the nooks and crannies - although it has been streamlined from the ISSA 2. It has a huge range of 16 different speed settings, although they’re not separated into dedicated ‘modes’ as such, and I actually found that 16 is too many. It has an interval timer, which prompts you to move to a different area of your mouth every 30 seconds for a thorough clean, but again no pressure sensor. Brushing timer – This helps ensure you brush for a full two minutes, which is the amount of time dentists recommend we spend cleaning our teeth. Some are auto-programmed to only brush for two minutes so you don’t need to think about the time. Others will beep or stutter when it’s time to stop.
