About this deal

I remembered I had half a container of Citristrip furniture stripper and some liming wax in the garage leftover from our wine cooler project. Why not try the bleached wood look again? If you have a piece of wood with a strong, visible grain to it – something like oak – you can really bring out this wood grain with liming wax. This isn’t a difficult technique to learn. You don’t need to bring out any paints – all you need is White Chalk Paint™ Wax, a Wax Brush and a lint-free cloth.

Liming Wax for a Weathered Oak Finish Homemade Liming Wax for a Weathered Oak Finish

Liming is easy, but you won't get the best results if you use it in the wrong way or the wrong place. It’s called Cerusing Finish (or sometimes Limed Finish), and it’s a process of rubbing a contrasting color into the pores of wood to highlight the patterns of the wood grain, similar to a whitewashing technique. You can choose to apply one or several coats of stain, depending on how dark you want the color to be. The darker the stain layer, the bolder the contrast will look when you apply the liming wax.

Liming wax, often referred to as lime wax or white wax, is a specially formulated product that’s primarily used for enhancing the appearance of wood furniture and other wooden items. The main ingredient of this wood wax is a white pigment, which is why it’s sometimes called white wax . This pigmented wax, when applied to bare, grained timber, settles into the wood grain, accentuating its pattern and texture and giving it a beautiful, whitened effect that’s both distinct and stylish. If you are applying several layers of stain, make sure the first layer is completely dry before applying the second coat. Keep in mind that the color will look darker when it is wet. Always work in the direction of the grain. This includes painting, wire brushing, and removing the paint. Working across the grain will produce scratches rather than defining the grain. All stripping is messy; I use paper towels; stripping pads and scrapers of course; a spray bottle of water for rinsing and mineral spirits for clean up -then you need to sand the project to remove any stripping chemical residue that was missed.Go for seconds. If desired, deepen the color contrast between the grain and the surrounding wood by brushing on the second coat of wax as you applied the first, then buff it with a cloth. Let the second coat cure.

How to lime wood to get that white wash effect | Real Homes

Liming is a traditional wood finishing technique that was once commonly used on floorboards, furniture, and beams. It enhances the wood’s natural grain with a white tint, giving it a lighter, aged, and weathered look. More importantly, it can extend the life expectancy of your timber without having to seal the wood. IF I would have chosen to be patient and gone a fourth pass with Citristrip, I think it would look more uniform like the cabinet. But it was a busy/super hot weekend and I chose to call it quits. Also, the rustic look was intriguing me. Here’s what I learned about stripping furniture: For a successful application of liming wax, you’ll need a few tools: a soft cloth or brush, sandpaper, wire brush, and protective gear or gloves. Preparing your workspace with a well-ventilated area, and ensuring the wood is clean and bare, is crucial too. The Process of Applying Liming WaxI waited with baited breath while Aidan Turner was trying to steal you away from Mr. CH – thinking he was going to tell you about liming wax? – just to find out that he had really nothing to do with it! lol If you want to learn more about how to apply liming wax, we will talk more about it in a later section. Important Properties Of Pine This technique, however, works very well with many species including mahogany or cherry. In fact, I prefer it on species like this maple table because they have a more delicate grain pattern. However, I don’t recommend this technique on pine or burled wood. Have you been watching the new Poldark series? Apparently I’ve been watching it way too much, because I had a dream recently about Ross Poldark.
