It’s a step above the usual faire, but it’s not unlike we’ve ever seen either. Curbing the story in favour of thematic cohesion means the film will not be for everyone. Indeed, I can see many an impatient punter giving up and thinking it a bore. Yet for those that like to immerse themselves in a layered piece it’ a hugely rewarding in its joint appreciation of horror and human frailty. Importantly The Witch also carries the distinction of being the first classic of 2016. As per the 2015 release, It Follows, it’s obviously premature to label it a contender for scary movie of the year. Yet if this doesn’t make people’s top five horror movies of 2016 it’ll only be because of how damn good everything else is. Blu-ray as a supplement, it's probably instructive to remember that many of the first settlers to come to the New Land were in fact Puritans.The Witch (2015) is a stylish and creepy horror film from director Robert Eggers. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Ineson. moments as the early scene introducing two of the focal children. familiar 17th century environment, albeit with a spooky supernatural air wafting through the misty woods, and that "folktale" element tends to reenacted for the edification of the audience. The Witch doesn't really traffic in standard horror tropes like jump cuts, booming LFE or The Witch’s lossless 5.1 mix is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio and it presents a lush, atmospheric soundscape that places the folk-inspired instrumental score throughout the channels and the sounds of the woods like wind in the trees and chirping birds in surrounds. This is a superbly balanced, clean, and subtle mix with excellent dynamics. The SupplementsHarvey Scrimshaw: Highlights include his apprehension about doing some of the horror scenes (like kissing an older actor), auditioning with Ralph and Anya, working with Robert Eggers, rehearsing the possession scene in a hotel, the movie’s many bugs and why he missed the premiere. (7 minutes) Louise Ford’s editing is fantastic and the structure of the film helps with the intensity and impending doom of the piece. The picture also looks fantastic, with Jarin Blaschke’s cinematography capturing the grey mood of the location the family is living in, and also the sense of natural light coming from a time when everything was candlelit. Mark Korven’s musical score also has a great impact, with the composer using a lot of similar period instruments to create a score that feels like a living part of the film, a mechanism of dread that constantly lies below the surface, insidiously. The film is set in New England in the 17 th century and focuses on a man named William (Ralph Ineson) and his family on their plantation. A case of Prideful conceit causes the exile of William and his family. They relocate to a farm by a large forest that they built themselves. William is married and has four kids. After his wife delivers her fifth child, he mysteriously vanishes one day. It is believed that a witch has in fact abducted the child for strange purposes. After this happens, we see the family, particularly Katherine (William’s wife) struggle with the vanishing. They also have twins and we see their daily routine on the farm. One such moment involves them playing with a goat that they claim can speak. There’s also talk of witchcraft, among other things. UPDATE: Second Sight has announced that is has delayed the release to June 20th 2022, as it is currently working on a new HDR grade supervised by director Robert Eggers.

Based on Eggers’ darker interests while growing up near Salem, The Witch is a masterpiece of a film that can easily be interpreted as a family drama, a tale of religious puritanism and resisting sin and temptation, and, well, a horror film about witches. Much of the tension around the film comes from the isolation the family is placed in and the struggles they have to make sure they have enough food while still keeping to their own values. who were confronting something more than simply an unknown land. The film benefits from an austere but seemingly historically accurate Note: moving away from the projector to the Philips to compare HDR10 and Dolby Vision layers, we get a slightly darker overall image in the DV layer but very little other significant differences between them. There’s a touch more colour saturation in the sky at that shot previously mentioned at 3 minutes from the DV layer and in some comparison photos taken (not with appropriate equipment it must be said), the DV layer had a slightly cooler look it - although to the eye and in motion, these differences were for the vast majority of the time negligible. The designed muted and desaturated colour scheme renders any real differences to these two HDR variants almost moot. A gorgeous film, an arthouse folk horror full of beautiful imagery and sounds, comes with a brand-new director overseen Dolby Vision color grading in one of Second Sight’s oh-so collectible 4K limited edition sets. This is highly recommended. The Witch (Limited Edition) is out on 4K Ultra HD Combo in the UK 25 July 2022 from Second Sight Films antithetical to some of 4K UHD's big "calling cards", namely increased resolution and highlights courtesy of HDR. As I mentioned in our original The Witch Blu-ray review, this Arri Alexa captured piece offersintentionally small scale The Witch. This pastoral horror story, given the subtitle A New England Folktale, reminded me in a way children. Once again, though, the film is almost weirdly restrained in its depiction of an all enveloping terror subsuming the family. (There are
