About this deal

The bulk of the bonus disc is made up of songs already available on "Direction, Reaction, Creation" and "Extras". The 80 Greatest Albums of 1980 What came out of all this was, arguably, the greatest year for great albums ever".

Paul Weller has freely admitted that the Beatles' Revolver was a major influence on much of the material on Sound Affects. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.Between tracks, the vinyl is dead-quiet, this amplifier is at 7 and this record is begging for more power. The social commentary was lost to me for a while - I was after the beat and aggression - but it did not take long to get the message. Weller's voice is in great form, but here the anguish and the anger sit closer together and in my humble opinion show a more mature and majestic depth to one of the great English bands of all time. Sound Affects was originally released in November 1980 at a time when The Jam was considered the biggest band in Britain.

I am unfamiliar with any previous release that may have been remastered by him but if this is the kind of quality that comes as a result, Universal mastering should hire him to remaster the entire back catalog of the Siouxsie and the Banshees botched remasters. One of the most popular bands to emerge from the English punk rock scene of 1977; The Jam had a phenomenal impact on pop music and wider youth culture. At the time of its release, he said that he considered the album a cross between Off the Wall and Revolver. Ended up selling my copy of this, and the also-not-nice vinyl remaster, and picking up the original UK.

The original sounds much more dynamic, the sound is rich and full, each instrument and vocal track is clean and sounds great. There are still eight unreleased tracks as well - all good (better than 99% of Blur's back-catalogue, anyway) though not quite of the calibre of the material on "Extras". Weller's poetic and sarcastic wit combine with edgy but poppy tunes to really make this the jam's standout album. The cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various Sound Effects records produced by the BBC during the 1970s.

Sound Affects was reissued on 8 November 2010 as a two-CD deluxe edition to celebrate its 30th anniversary. No trace of that here: he is furious, and seems to run forward, dragging the other players with him, towards the ballot box, and they can hardly keep pace. Noted musical influences on Sound Affects include post-punk groups such as Wire, Gang of Four, and Joy Division and, particularly evident in Rick Buckler's drumming, Michael Jackson's Off the Wall. Not only are all the dynamics fully retained in this wonderful new remaster, but there has been a careful amount of re-equalization to correct from the midrange-heavy remaster from 2000. In 2020, Rolling Stone included Sound Affects in their "80 Greatest albums of 1980" list, praising the band for crafting their "finest album", while encapsulating "the classic English songcraft of the Kinks and the Small Faces, singing about working-class anger". As a nice change to some of my other (audio) critical reviews, I'm pleased to finish this by saying, well done Universal Music. Scrape Away is a classic for those desperate to leave it all behind, and Monday – thankfully far less depressing than its namesake – combines the melancholy of Embarrassment-era Madness with Byrds jangle.

This involved consulting a few of the band's friends as to what they thought the best release would be. It may just be a list of simple things we’ve all done, seen or heard, with an ironic chorus, acoustic guitars and no drums, but so what? On Sound Affects’ opener, Pretty Green, Paul Weller barks about one use for his money in a teeth-gnashing staccato: "I’m gonna put it in the juke box".Sound Affects' is filled with so many great songs: `Set The House Ablaze' has a great whistle-hook, `Monday' has an attractive melancholy melody, `Scrape Away' is a strong and hook-filled album closer. That was the sort of sound he imagined we should be going for: hard, metallic, quite stripped-down… jagged. This 2010 deluxe edition is a good release - my personal feeling is that with a bit more effort, Polydor/Universal could and should have made this an absolute killer release. And it does contain at least two of the best Jam singles that never were, in "Pretty Green" and "Boy About Town"; to say nothing of "Start! I doubt it - those 38-year old magnetic tapes were sourced and sent to the Czech Republic to cut a lacquer?
