About this deal

A new saga begins. Kind of a cross between The Hobbit and Watership Down this book is aimed at children aged around Nine or Ten.......But in my late Fourties I found it to be an engaging read and one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Young rabbit Fiver is convinced that a great evil is about to befall the warren where he lives - but no one will listen to him. When a travelling bard arrives at Thornwood Warren on Midwinter night, he is warmly welcomed. In return for food and lodging, he settles down to tell the tale of Podkin One-Ear - and soon the rabbits are enthralled to hear the story of how one lost little rabbit overcame the cruellest enemy imaginable, and became the greatest warrior their land has ever known. About This Edition ISBN:We have differentiated this resource for Year 3 and Year 4 and your class can also look at which adjective would suit best in each sentence. While it's not especially gory or nightmarish, there's a lot of combat and violent conflict. Podkin loses an ear in a narrow escape. Young rabbits flee the takeover of their village by relentless, zombie-like robot rabbits who kill their father, want to kill them, and pursue them throughout the story. Lots of fighting, hand-to-hand combat with stabbing and slashing. Also explosives. Families can talk about how the animal characters have lives and struggles that seem a lot like human ones in Podkin One-Ear. Do you like animal fantasies like this, or do you prefer more realistic animal stories?

In this story, Podkin One-Ear lost his ear when trying to escape from the Gorm at Redwater Warren. However, the little rabbits who are listening to the storyteller have many other theories on how he lost his ear. We have explored a few of these examples.Kieran graduated from Southampton University with a degree in English, and also did a foundation year at Falmouth College of Art. Ever since he first read The Hobbit at age six, he has been passionate about stories and storytelling. The Legend of Podkin One-Ear’ won the Blue Peter Book Award 2017, the Prix Sorcieres 2019, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2018 and nominated for the Carnegie Award 2018. It has also been optioned for television. Illustration by David Wyatt The Gift of Dark Hollow Podkin, the so called hero of this story -SIGH- mans not hot. I'm assuming Kieran thought he was creating an anti-hero type of character. But it fell so unbelievably flat. Podkin is lazy, with no sense of responsibility, and he's constantly spoiled. What's worse is that several characters call out Podkin's bratty attitude, seeming to say that Kieran knows what he's done with his character but instead of treating Podkin like the useless kid he is they constantly believe HE is the hero. For no other reason that I can see other than he's male. To be honest I found Podkin vaguely annoying at the start of the story, warming more to his practically minded sister Paz, but here's where the author does so well within a very short time you start to see hidden depths from Podkin that change your mind about him, no small feat considering it's not the longest of books.....

I found this book whilst trawling through Libby for an insomnia-friendly title (not too scary or I'd have nightmares later, not too slow or else I'd get frustrated and wake up more). Podkin One-Ear was an absolutely perfect fit. Ovo, ipak, nije jedna od tih priča. Ovo je priča o malenom zečiću koji tek treba postati legendom. Riječima barda iz čijih je usta priča izašla, ova je priča različita. Zato što je istinita. The Gift of Dark Hollow was nominated for the Carnegie Award 2019. Illustration by David Wyatt The Beasts of Grimheart Most of my favourite children’s books feature animals with human traits ‘Watership Down’ ‘Mrs Frisby and the rats of NIMH’.In chapter 3 Podkin found a letter wrapped around the blade of Starclaw. It was from his mother and had been written in Ogham, an ancient written language that Paz could read but Podkin had been too lazy to learn.
