We may all know how the abdication crisis pans out but what happens to the protagonists of international power betting against each other on the outcome? Rory Clements is best known for his John Shakespeare series, but Corpus is the first of his books I’ve read, so I was unsure that I would like it when I received an ARC from NetGalley. I find the interwar period fascinating anyway though it tends to be overshadowed by the Second World War and post-war eras. If a refund is payable to you we will process the refund as soon as possible, and, in any case within fourteen (14) days.

His new hero, Cambridge lecturer, American-born Tom Wilde, a specialist in Elizabethan espionage history, faces similar problems. Intelligent, impetuous, independent and definitely no-one's token literary female or rescue fodder, she's the person who drags Tom in when her friend Nancy dies of the drug overdose. of our deliveries are made by Royal Mail as we think they give the best service and cover all areas of the UK. this fascinating pre-war era comes breathtakingly and insidiously to life in a complex, compelling opener to what promises to be another extraordinary historical series as Clements harnesses society's distrust, divisions and deceptions in a powerful and plausible thriller. This gentleman also believes that opinions should be formed based on evidence not assumption, and encourages that approach from his students.Summary: The creator of Tudor spy John Shakespeare introduces us to a 1930s professor who falls into the world of murder and espionage. Along the way, they’ll unlock wisdom for those of us navigating our own coupledoms, and for those still seeking their perfect match.

And according to the residents of the Japanese island of Okinawa - the world's longest-living people - finding it is the key to a longer and more fulfilled life. Unfortunately, though, the protagonists are pale and dull compared to the supporting cast and, while some of the plot turns are gripping, others are flimsy and one is outright ludicrous. While fragile teacups clink innocently against their saucers in houses up and down the country, the elements of conspiracy are frighteningly close and its darkening divide has the potential to alter the course of history as we know it. A much-used word, karma is loosely understood as a system of checks and balances in our lives, of good actions and bad deeds, of good thoughts and bad intentions.Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. Now he has another string to his bow in the form of an American professor, although there is a link between the two. The silver syringe in her arm convinces the police that it’s an accidental heroin overdose but Nancy’s friend, Lydia Morris, knows that Nancy was up to something in Berlin and is convinced that something more nefarious has happened.

The list of characters and subplots is huge, and at times bewildering, but all have depth and there are more hits than misses. K. As too is Harold Dill, the communist senior academic acting as recruiter for the Russians, a character closely based on Arnold Deutsch, who first involved the Apostles and devised their ‘cover’ of apparent total commitment to the establishment. Her schoolfriend Nancy has suddenly died, apparently of a heroin overdose, and then the parents of another friend have been found butchered in their home.Wilde is thrust into this hothouse of intrigue by his friendship with his attractive neighbour Lydia, whose left-leaning former Girton College friend is found dead, from a supposed drugs overdose. Easy read/ interesting period ie just a year before WW2 / quite hilarious in the parts referring to the social class differences. Corpus is a standout historical novel and spy thriller by an author who can turn his hand to any historical period he chooses. Wilde is a truly brilliant character who is no wannabe hero just a determined, level headed problem solver when the need demands, which will come in particularly handy in the minefield of political riddles he’s stumbled into.
