About this deal

The ending was clever and with hindsight it was obvious that there had been a million clues I had overlooked!

When they come across these wooden figures referred to as companions, Elsie finds them intriguing and decides to bring them out. You could not explain fear; you could only feel it, roaring through the silence and striking your heart still. What an intriguing, atmospheric and scarily good story which had the hairs standing on the back of my neck. Creepiness and uncertainty can become the most addictive poison when combined, and Laura Purcell did an excellent job. I was lucky enough to purchase a hard copy of this novel and cover is beautifully illustrated and unique.

A classic of its time that’s as exciting to read now as it was 150 years ago, and a truly celebrated translated novel that’s one of the most vital books like Downton Abbey for old fans and newcomers alike. Since then I’ve been interested in exploring the ways in which unusual experiences might relate to inner speech, dialogue, and social cognition. Brideshead Revisitedis, in fact easily the book that most closely resembles the story, setting, and time period of Downton Abbey. It’s a powerful story written with more sharp wit and wisdom than most other English novels of the 20 th century.

The silent companions, things I had never heard of, make an appearance and keep making appearances despite the fact that they are gotten rid of time and time again. There are tricks of the eye that could catch movie patrons off guard, and I honestly think that the end effect could be pretty frightening. He uses the actual grain of the wooden panel to represent a backboard and skilfully simulates leather straps holding a variety of three-dimensional objects. The placement of a dummy board beneath a dark staircase or at the end of a poorly lit corridor would certainly give a visitor cause to look twice, perhaps to even go so far as to question what was real and what wasn't.Eliot’s description was based on his memory of reading about one of Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expeditions. Lilith has been dazzling the crowds with an almost supernatural talent, but Jenny finds a dark pact lies behind the success – a pact that may have consequences not only for Lilith but the entire theatre. Once the alternating timelines started happening, I did enjoy the Gothic style of writing for the most part. This a dual timeline tale, alternating between the 1800’s and 1600’s, all based around a gothic castle in England with a long, tragic history. A Victorian ghost story that evokes a most unsettling kind of fear, this is a tale that creeps its way through the consciousness in ways you least expect--much like the silent companions themselves.

Short, but terrifying, this story begins with a woman in an asylum who has been drugged into insensibility.Elsie, recently widowed, and pregnant with her first child arrives in a remote village, with her husband’s cousin, Sarah, to live in an old home, owned by her husband, referred to as ‘The Bridge’, which has not been lived in for quite some time. Paintings from the Collections of the National Trust showcases works by some of the most renowned European artists of all time, cared for by the Trust and housed in its properties. The residents of the estate are terrified of the figure, but Elsie tries to shrug this off as simple superstition—that is, until she notices the figure’s eyes following her. She also discovers a diary written by the previous owner of the house, Annie, who apparently went a little spend-happy when the local curiosity fair rolled through town.
