About this deal

There are 13 ISO settings available on the Sony A7C. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting for both JPEG and RAW formats. JPEG Perhaps unsurprisingly given its compact size, the A7C R only has a single memory card slot. The larger A7R V has dual memory card slots, and one of these slots can interchangeably use UHS-II SD-cards and even faster CFexpress Type A cards.

On the left side of the camera, from top-down, are a mic port (top port cover), the memory card slot (middle port cover), a headphone port, an HDMI (micro) port, and a SuperSpeed 5 Gbps USB 3.2 Type-C Terminal. Additional frames are then captured each .41 seconds, indicating that the a7C takes about that long to write an uncompressed file to the card. Unfortunately, unlike Canon's RAW file compression, Sony's compression algorithm is a lossy one, meaning that some image detail is not retained during compression. Sony promises up to 15-stops of dynamic range at low ISO sensitivity for stills, and Sony MILCs, including this one, are highly regarded for their dynamic range. The Delete / Custom button on the rear can also be assigned one of the 27 frequently used functions for direct access.

What's new and how it compares

That seems like the logical preference, with the dramatically smaller file sizes being much-preferred. The grip makes a noticeable impact in body dimensions, this is the first reduction I'd expect, and the a7C brings no surprises in this regard. We tried an experiment. We put the A7C and its kit lens alongside an A7R II and Sony's 24-105mm lens. As you'd expect, there's a big size difference. Then we put the 24-105mm on the A7C and the new retracting kit lens on the A7R II – the size disparity now favors the A7R II by almost as great a margin. The Sony A7C performs well, especially in our lab tests, but is disappointing on a number of levels. It's smaller than a regular A7 but not by enough (in our opinion) to make up for the worse viewfinder. Its size advantage really comes from the new 28-60mm kit lens, not from the new body design. Its specifications are unambitious to say the least, particularly in terms of its video capabilities, but its practical performance, from its handy vari-angle screen to its excellent AF system, make it very effective at what it’s designed to do.

With the a7C having the same imaging sensor as the a7 III, I will substitute a7 III results for the image quality comparisons. Turn Silent Shooting mode off (electronic first curtain shutter — full mechanical shutter is not available), and we can create the shutter audio clips. Movies can be recorded in any shooting mode by pressing the MOVIE button located on top of the viewfinder, where it can easily be reached from the front. Those familiar with other Sony Alpha full-frame cameras will find the a7C to have a significant subset of the features they are familiar with.

Comments

Sony's colour profiles are split into 'creative looks' and 'picture profiles', with the former most suitable for stills and the latter for video, although either can be applied to both stills and video.

Compatible lenses are listed at: https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/support/ilc/breathing/en/ . Angle of view and image quality may change slightly when this function is turned ON. Full compensation may not be possible with some lenses. This function is not available when shooting movies at 120p, when using the S&Q mode at 120p, or when shooting stills. The A7C R has a slightly higher-resolution 3-inch, 3:2 ratio LCD screen than the A7C - 1.03 million versus 922,000 dots - but we'd have expected to see a much higher resolution screen on a new camera released in 2023, especially one that some may consider to be a flagship model. Another electronic shutter issue to be aware of is that certain light pulsing can influence the results, potentially creating banding. For the very first time, Sony have employed a monocoque construction for the A7C, which is more commonly used in the car and aircraft industries, predominantly to help achieve the size and weight reduction. With the focus assist light enabled, even complete darkness is not a problem within the light's range, which is decent. While 8 seconds is not a long timespan, it seems quite long when inserting a not-preformatted memory card when action is happening. I frequently activate the EVF proximately detector when reaching for the menu with my left thumb, causing me to pause while figuring out why the menu is not appearing (a minor training issue).

Choosing between the equally new Sony A7C II and the A7C R really comes down to whether or not you want or need the much greater 61 megapixel resolution offered by the latter model, along with the other benefits of that particular sensor, such as pixel-shift multi-shooting, the multi-resolution modes and slightly better video performance. The default Standard Creative Style was utilized for these results, and a set of non-noise-reduced JPG images are included for a base comparison. On the A7C R there are 693 phase-detection points that cover 79% of the frame, with the system working all the way down to -4EV low-light. The A7C R can recognise a human via its pose as well as its eye and face. So if the person's head is turned away from the camera, the A7C R will still accurately detect the subject as human based on its AI deep learning. The aluminium bodied Sony A7C R weighs 525g without a lens, battery and memory card fitted, amazingly just 22g more than the A6700 (503g) and a whopping 198g less than the A7R V (723g). I'm very particular about image quality, and my Sony cameras are always set to capture uncompressed RAW images, ensuring no compromise.
