About this deal

This simplified version of HABA's classic game is made especially for the needs of toddlers and preschoolers. The strategic element becomes apparent as you try to place your animals in an ideal location as not to collapse the stack while simultaneously attempting to deny your opponent the same. I was surprised to find kids laughing while demoing games and that every game on display was kid friendly (that also have educational undertones as well). Question mark: this symbol means other players choose which animal the current player must stack on the crocodile. I like that it teaches hand-eye coordination for kids in a way that is not boring or too easy for adults.

Though, I’m not going to say it makes the game easier; it does give you more first places to go, though, which is pretty helpful. They love being able to control their turns and even though Animal Upon Animal uses a die that adds a randomization element, the outcome is controlled by the player’s actions. It’s a bit more about managing weight than playing with interesting physics, which is always my favorite part of stacking games.A roll of the die tells the players how many animals can be placed or whether they can add to the alligator base. I’m pretty sure it evens out on a long enough timetable, so I’m not particularly bothered by Crest Climbers at any player count.

A flamingo on the crocodile, a sheep on the flamingo, a snake over the sheep, so on and so on, higher and higher. Our youngest player had a great time with the tokens and with the animals, just stacking and exploring with them. Since our kids are older, they’ll try to make the stack as challenging as possible by just piling straight up.

For example, my 5 and 8-year old taught their grandparents to play under 5 minutes and were able to answer their questions throughout as they played. And who are we kidding, I will take any chance to play a game that I can get and it’s great to be able to share that with Rowan. A few years ago, our friend Chrissy wrote about how Animal Upon Animal teaches physics; kids will start to place an animal, then stop and think about other ways to place it that might work better. Who will position the penguin on top of the crocodile, the sheep on top of the penguin, the serpent on the sheep, the tucan . The pieces are nice and chunky, the rules are simple, and the whole thing kind of is easy to pick up and play.

Players are trying to stack all of the animals before the wooden crab makes it to the end of the sun tile path.If more than two animals fall off because a player tried to stack, then that player has to add only two animals to their animal total- then remaining are placed out of play. Here you’ll find all our top game recommendations so you and your family can play only the best games together!
