About this deal

By June 1977, Coppola had offered his car, house, and The Godfather profits as security to finish the film. The boat then slowly passes the giant tail of a shot down B-52 bomber as the noise of engines high in the sky is heard. It is a flawed ending, one which has been critiqued by many while others find it extremely effective. There is a great section on the different cuts of the film, including a look at the 5 hour rough cut.

from MGM/UA Entertainment Company" (as it made its network debut shortly after the merger of MGM and UA).Coppola offered the lead role of Willard to Robert De Niro, but he declined due to other commitments. Nearly fifty years later, Gerretsen’s photographs remind us of Coppola’s artistic achievements and of a pivotal era in American cultural history. Coppola and Roos had been impressed by Martin Sheen's screen test for Michael in The Godfather and he became the second choice to play Willard, but he had already accepted another project. The screenplay, co-written by Coppola, John Milius and Michael Herr, is loosely based on the 1899 novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, with the setting changed from late 19th-century Congo to the Vietnam War. Coppola spent the last few months of 1975 revising Milius's script and negotiating with United Artists to secure financing for the production.

On December 14, 1981, a day after martial law was enacted in the Soviet-controlled Polish People's Republic, photographer Chris Niedenthal photographed an OT-64 SKOT armored personnel carrier with soldiers of the Polish People's Army standing around it, in front of the Moskwa Cinema [ pl] with a banner containing the Polish-language title of the movie, which was Czas apokalipsy (literally: Time of the Apocalypse). The opening shots of the film reveal Willard in a Saigon hotel; on his nightstand is a gun (he has already considered suicide) and he explains, in a voice-over, that he was unable to adjust to life in the United States after his first tour of duty. An important difference between these characters, however, is that Willard begins the film as a man already accustomed to the "horror" around him. That year at Cannes, Apocalypse Now won the Palme d'Or, going on from there to worldwide acclaim and etching itself in the memories of audiences with unforgettable sequences like the dawn helicopter attack scored to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" or Lt. Then we know that Kurtz, as a king of his tribe, cannot afford to die a slow natural death, but must be killed before he is so weak as to affect the people, cattle and crops of the Montagnards. Kurtz — a man who once personified the traditional American values of strength and valor, but who became — once he glimpsed the darkness of war — someone who could not uphold the hypocrisy of which he was once a major part. It is suggested throughout the film that Kurtz is a remarkable person, talented and brave, a great solider with excellent judgement but a tendency to follow his own rules. This is more clear in cuts of the film that include the French Plantation sequence than in the original theatrical version.

Murch thought that there was a way to assemble the film without narration but that it would take ten months, and decided to give it another try. For all the critique of the US Army in the early part of the film, Willard has, by decisively rejecting Kurtz, accepted the chaos of the Vietnam War and the film has performed a 180-degree turn. His magical virtue is in the strictest sense of the word contagious: his divinity is a fire, which, under proper restraints, confers endless blessings, but, if rashly touched or allowed to break bounds, burns and destroys what it touches. Resisting Kilgore’s attempts to convince Lance to surf with him on the newly conquered beach, Willard gathers the sailors to board the PBR and continue on their mission. The helicopter squadron, playing " Ride of the Valkyries" on loudspeakers, raids at dawn with a napalm strike. As Marlow's jaunt to Africa becomes much more to him than an adventure, so does Willard's mission to kill Col. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Apocalypse Now holds an approval rating of 97% based on 96 reviews, with an average rating of 8. Milius says the classic line "Charlie don't surf" was inspired by a comment Ariel Sharon made during the Six-Day War, when he went skin diving after capturing enemy territory and announced, "We're eating their fish".

Willard also learns that Kurtz organized a covert operation ("Archangel") without the permission of his superiors — an operation which might have brought him court-martial, but instead earned him a promotion to Colonel once the news of it was made public. Given unprecedented access to the film’s stars, extras, crew, and legendary behind-the-scenes drama he spent six months in the Philippines, shooting thousands of images. There have been, to date, many variations of the end credit sequence, beginning with the 35 mm general release, where Coppola elected to show the credits superimposed over shots of the jungle exploding into flames. In the novella, Marlow is the pilot of a river boat sent to collect ivory from Kurtz's outpost, only gradually becoming infatuated with Kurtz. Sheen's brother Joe Estevez stood in for Willard in some scenes and performed the character's voiceover narrations while his son Charlie appears in the film as an extra. The helicopter attack scene with the Ride of the Valkyries soundtrack was chosen as the most memorable film scene ever by Empire magazine. These problems included expensive sets being destroyed by severe weather, Brando showing up on set overweight and completely unprepared, and Sheen having a breakdown and suffering a near-fatal heart attack on location. When his health shows the first sign of failing, he must be put to death and power must pass to a younger, more vigorous specimen. Coppola was drawn to Milius's script, which he described as "a comedy and a terrifying psychological horror story", and acquired the rights. Coppola said that he made up for cutting this scene by having the PBR pass under an aircraft tail in the final cut.
