About this deal

Sometimes we may include links to online retailers, from which we might receive a commission if you make a purchase. Every single job card, and the back of every card in the game, features the exact same picture of Don Corleone. Stashing cash away is especially important, as any money left in your hand could be claimed by Don Corleone at the end of a round. Not only will this premium, limited edition MONOPOLY look stunning on display at home, but it's perfect to show off and play with your amici.

Once the Turf War is resolved in each Act, players get to bid for Allies (these are further broken down by Act, and gradually provide bigger and greater rewards as the game progresses). Allies can be extremely powerful, and they get more powerful as the game goes on, allowing you to do things such as send figures to other locations on the board, organise drive by shootings, shake down businesses multiple times, take control of turfs and make some serious cash. The Godfather Game is played with a deck of 52 cards, being cash cards, racket cards, "Breaks of the Game" cards, and fingerman cards, one of which is drawn at the start of each player's turn. I was victorious despite being targeted with extortion twice (it seems there is murmuring about whether those cards are overpowered, I'm still unsure). After this phase, the final part of each Act is when players may need to discard cards to stay within the hand limit for each Act (these cards are considered a “Tribute to the Don”, which is suitably thematic! If a Breaks of the Game card is pulled, a dice is rolled to determine whether the player must take a card from the "Good Break" or the "Bad Break" pile and either receive pay or be penalized. I mean, it doesn't take anything from the whole experience, but they could've made the immersion even bigger if every single card had an individual illustration.

And now, since we live in a time where various licenses are being used to create great games we’re getting a boardgame version of the movie courtesy of designer Eric Lang and publisher CMON. The variable businesses and allies available (only about half are used each game) keeps gameplay fresh by offering new challenges almost every time you play, and the multiple routes to scoring (completing jobs, controlling turf, and gathering money) means that this game has a lot of strategic depth.I can’t really talk to you about how this game plays without first explaining the roll of the little tin suitcase you each get. Play from a hand of cards that allow you to bump off other players, duck behind a car, make alliances and run off to Las Vegas or Italy. Victory will most likely go the the player who either kept a low profile or sent everyone else to sleep with the fishes. The goods cards make up for this oversight, applying the stark black and white puppet-string style of the unmistakable logo to great effect.

If that wasn’t luxurious enough, each player gets their own miniature suitcase: actually a hinged metal box just the right size to stash some ill-gotten loot. Furthermore, since businesses only have a single space for thugs there’s always a rush to grab resources for jobs before another player gets to them, although I did find the game to be a bit too generous with how easy it was to acquire the blood money, weapons and booze needed to complete jobs. There are no tokens, but the rest of the components are top quality as can be expected from any CMON game. At its heart, this is a light Euro-style game of worker placement comparable to the popular Lords of Waterdeep, but it's mean in a way befitting its pin-striped source material. This is a Euro-style game in every sense, with elements of worker placement, area control, hand management and set collection all blended seamlessly together.

The Godfather: Corleone’s Empire is a gangster themed strategy board game packed with detailed miniatures, gorgeous artwork, difficult decisions and cold-blooded murder. This authentic game will take you into the middle of the war between the Five Families, so why not spend some time in the elegant world of The Godfather? The act closes with a struggle for control of the seven “turfs” in the city, using an area control mechanism where the player who deployed the most workers in a turf gets control, earning privileges as long as they can keep it and possibly cash at the end of the game. The gameplay and mechanics are clean and easily grasped, but more importantly, The Godfather: Corleone’s Empire could serve as an excellent gateway game for those looking to bring new gamers into the fold, and as such deserves a place alongside such classics as Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, I think. Although framed around the first Godfather film – the four acts span from the opening wedding scene (“You come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married, and you ask me to do murder for money.
