About this deal

Guide one of these dynasties and send colonists to the remote realms of the Empire; develop your trade network; and appease the ancient gods for their favor - all to gain the chance to emerge victorious! Below is a brief summary of the game, followed by my opinions on whether it lived up to my expectations. On a turn, players will play one action card from their hand into their discard pile and do what it says. And for a game that plays up to six players, it’s amazing that you can get a full game completed in just 90 minutes if everyone knows how to play. There’s some randomness with the setup, but I fear that there might not be enough randomness to avoid this problem.

It never feels less than breezy, and is one of the few games in my collection that usually comes in under its estimated play time (which is no small feat, mind you). out of 5 on BGG, the rules fit on just two double-sided pages, complete with illustrations and examples. The puzzle itself is shaped by everyone’s collective actions, making the first play, at least, feel like you’re trying to do math while someone else keeps rearranging the numbers in the equation. And thankfully there’s a variant in the rules for new players which walks you through the scoring quite early in the game; I’d certainly recommend using it – a fabulous innovation. Analyzing the board and timing a chain of actions dependent on a precise use of the diplomat is a gamble, but if you’ve correctly predicted what your opponent will do, it’s a fantastic gambit to pull off.My head says that this is exactly the kind of game that can probably be figured out with a moderate amount of play, and that avoiding that fate is so difficult to design.

One one side it's refreshing to see a different point of view from someone who may have a different taste in games - personally I found Century: Spiceroad incredibly dull as a 2 player game and I have concerns Concordia is roughly the same - on the other hand, I cannot be sure if his negative experience is coming from the inability to grasp the "flow" of the game, expecting too much from it, wanting to do more than it actually offers and not being aware of what it offers. The Concordia board game is a peaceful strategy game of economic development in Roman times for 2-5 players aged 13 and up. That player receives the Concordia card (which offers a 7 point bonus), and each other player gets one more turn.I would highly recommend this game to anyone who wants a mentally stimulating Euro game that can be equally enjoyed by avid gamers and beginners. Lastly, the game has an excellent expansion, Concordia: Salsa, which brings with it two new maps, and the titular Salsa, which is an expensive, wild card resource. So you not only have to have an eye on what cards you need; you also need to make sure no other player achieves a monopoly on any of the scoring conditions, because each additional god in your hand is a multiplier at the end of the game.

If another player uses a card that you don’t have, you’ll want to have your Diplomat handy, for example. I would absolutely love to see an overhaul of the scoring run down to take this app to the next level and replicate one of the best features of the physical game however even without that this app has done a great job making the move to the digital tabletop. How can I afford not to do it, if my neighbor uses their Prefect card to trigger a production in that same region, where they already have a couple other trading houses? This can have one of two effects: either players get discouraged because every move seems to be of relatively equal value, or those who understand the game well are able to calculate those marginal plays so well that the game becomes simple for them–there’s no more mystery to it. When you use the prefect action, instead of producing resources, you can instead take all of the coins shown to flip back every tile to its resource side! But before you consign Concordia to the bin of JASE (just another soulless Euro), you’ve got to take a closer look.
