We feel that the term more accurately represents children who have the potential to achieve highly but may not currently be doing so and who need support to do so. The systematic and consistent teaching of phonics is one of the key ways of achieving this, so we will work with experts and practitioners to provide further guidance to support the teaching of reading within Curriculum for Wales. Our Form 6 Peer Support volunteers facilitate a paired reading programme with individual children identified as benefitting from additional reading practice in the Junior Years and Form 1 and 2.
