About this deal

Telling the untold stories of generations of Irish women who saw their American Dream become a nightmare. The project also seeks to uncover the types of criminal activity in which Irish women were involved, from drunkenness to murder. Our exhibition shines a light on their living conditions in the tenement and the treatment they received from the authorities. It seeks to explore how and in what ways Irish women were sexually deviant in North America and how they were treated. Situated high in the Rocky mountains, Butte was just one of hundreds of Irish communities dotted across the American West.The show starts however with the bizarre story of a 19th century Irish conman who played a role in getting the church off the ground in the 1830s. These olfactive additions represent an exciting new direction for Omagh’s Ulster American Folk Park, giving visitors the opportunity to experience history in a unique and intimate way.

Were Irishwomen migrants involved in illegal practices of abortion and infanticide to the same extent as their counterparts in Ireland? Leanne McCormick is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts and Humanities at Ulster University and co-creator with Elaine Farrell of the Bad Bridget project. As well as working on Bad Bridget I am interested in gender history, history of medicine and sexuality.

Through an eclectic mix of sights, sounds, smells and objects, our exhibition charts these women's experiences of migration; starting with their lives in Ireland, and the hardships that led many to migrate. In the second and final part of my series on the history of podcasting I look at how podcasting became so popular and where it’s heading. Arriving in America came as a shock to many of the women—finding a job and a place to live wasn't easy.

Some stories and circumstances were difficult to read by their nature, but the authors handled this well. Does the evidence suggest that Irishwomen deviated from societal norms to a greater extent than other ethnic groups and how far were the reactions of the authorities guided influenced by ethnic prejudices? We’ve been working with the brilliant National Museums NI on this exhibition since then so it’s very exciting to see it come to fruition now!
