About this deal

Eve thinks she should try to connect more with Hot Nate and let him read his poems to her in a park again like he used to (all I can think about are the Kens playing guitar at the Barbies for four hours on the beach), even though she doesn't even like poetry and would rather do quadratic equations because she likes MATH, goddammit.

My thanks to the publisher for providing a digital copy of this book for review via NetGalley - which I have since purchased. I caught myself nervously laughing at the end of chapters, and thankfully, the final twist was a masterpiece. The premise is a lot darker than Freida's other books, which I actually felt like made some of the twists less far fetched. Then Addie gets her lunch dumped on the ground by Kenzie and Kenzie sees a copy of the poem SP Nate wrote. An old book that is received in the post by the headmaster of an exclusive private school in Devon is the start of a series of gruesome deaths. The author has structured a book here that has kept the attention of the reader feeling sick, feeling in awe, feeling yuk, feeling, well, that was deserved, feeling or horror, then feeling of satisfaction. The characters are quite dysfunctional at times as they struggle with their past and the relationships they start to develop. The descriptions of the murders are pretty gruesome but I didn't think they were gratuitous, although I wanted to read with my hands over my eyes and singing "lalalalala" to block out the images and sounds I was imagining! The Teacher began to make sense and I realised just how clever the author had been, she set the scene and then cunningly bought all the characters together in a dark and troubling tale.

From the title I pretty much had the plot worked out in my head, but rather like the book nothing was as it seemed and it wasn’t long before I realised I had been pretty much misdirected by the blurb. I’ve read her books pretty much from the start and been a loyal reader, but I am sensing a theme lately. We're supposed to believe that Addie left a recorded statement with a police officer detailing how she assaulted her math teacher then buried her alive, yet faced ZERO consequences? But as they re drawn into a network of corruption, lies and exploitation, every step brings them closer to grim secrets hidden at the heart of their community. Interspersed among the teachers’ stories—a seeming scandal, a fourth-grade whodunit, and teacher confessions—are hard-hitting essays featuring cutting-edge reporting on the biggest issues facing teachers today, such as school violence; outrageous parent behavior; inadequate support, staffing, and resources coupled with unrealistic mounting demands; the “myth” of teacher burnout; the COVID-19 pandemic; and ways all of us can help the professionals who are central both to the lives of our children and the heart of our communities.Because this is a read certainly that will keep your stomach churning, this will keep your mind ticking, this will keep you up all night in more ways than one and if you, like me, have a vivid imagination you will be seeing this play out in your minds eye. If you’re looking for something you can binge read in one sitting that will keep you guessing until the epilogue, then look no further! The story is about a serial killer who is getting all gore happy with some old guys who aren't the nicest people around. One thread is a series of brutal murders, first a headmaster of a private school in Exeter by a mysterious figure.

Hot Nate says he's trying so hard to resist her but he just can't and then they go into the abandoned photography darkroom and make out a bunch.

On the other hand if you don’t like well described murder scenes this may not be the book for you I’m afraid. The story went in a direction that I didn’t expect and I can’t say it was something that I had any interest in. I found it incredibly difficult to believe that not only did she not initially recognize him as a student at the high school she taught at, but that she never saw him around after they began the affair. This is the first of the series featuring DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles who as two outsiders are perfectly matched as partners. Don’t let that put you off because layer after layer is revealed as to the circumstances that formed the motivation and modus operandi of the killer, and the background to the other main characters.
