Speaking of characters, I didn't manage to connect with anyone in the story given that I found it hard to relate to them within the storyline. It is then up to the author to get you to fully commit hours of your life on their story, all the while everyone is hoping for the grand payout -- an excellent story and a happy reader. Bitsy, our “sleeping beauty”, is constantly referred to as plain or even unattractive in comparison to everyone in the kingdom.

His second book, Overheard in a Tower Block, was shortlisted for the 2018 CLPE CLiPPA Poetry Award and is longlisted for the 2019 UKLA Book Awards. His plays have received special note from Soho's Verity Bargate Award and The Bruntwood Playwriting Competition and he has spent many years touring and performing his work. The plot was simple enough for a child to follow yet the aspects it deals with (poorly, I might add) are not. She attended Bryn Mawr College on full scholarship and later received her MFA from University of California, San Diego. If you’re looking for a fairytale reimagining this could be something you’ll really enjoy but it didn’t quite hit the mark for me.Creeping Beauty caught my eye as it was described as a subversive and feminist take on Sleeping Beauty. Full of diverse characters and even though there is a similarity to the fairy tale we know as Sleeping Beauty this book is still unique and will be a story that you remember for a long time. I felt that there were points in the book that weren’t explained at all and some that shouldn’t have been explained because there was no purpose to them.

It’s definitely a fresher take on Sleeping Beauty with the power of teamwork and friendship at its heart. It would be interesting, however, to explore the perspectives of boy readers as (although the author is male) the only male characters prove to be either inadequate or (literally) wooden. I really thought I would maybe dislike this book, but I think I needed a book filled with ridiculousness like this one because my mood said yes to this book! I honestly can't say whether the "twist" at the end makes sense or if I was just so distracted with trying to get through the book that I missed some important piece of information, but the climax and ending feels haphazardly thrown together.I loved their back and forth and really thought they were the only ones who would be able to appreciate each other at their bests and handle each other at their worsts. Creeping Beauty is retelling of Sleeping Beauty, but when Bitsy, our princess, touches the spindle, she is whisked away to another world.
